Water Underfloor Heating

Anyone had Underfloor Heating installed , getting conflicting advice from various plumbers / builders etc such as they wouldnt use it / go electric. I have a new extension with floors ready prepared for it ie 100 mil Celotex and then screed to be put in but not sure now ???.

our house is not on gas main and so has no central heating - putting piped water underfloor heating has transformed the house! Not cheaper but worth it!

It depends on the flooring. A good engineered laminated flooring may be OK (can have a natural wood surface), but you may have to ask the manufacturer, and you may not get any guarantee. I think Junckers make a flooring designed for this, but it will be expensive. Avoid solid oak, as this has a life of its own. However any sort of timber will reduce the heating efficiency of the floor. A concrete floor with hot water heating is best matched with ceramic or stone tiles (and a few rugs for softness). The limestone tiles we put in this barn conversion have a very 'soft' look. Maybe you could add timber to the room elsewhere?

Hi Isabel, must have been a terrible time for you. As you state, limestone is porous and does need re-sealing often. This is one of the reason people now prefer stone effect porcelain instead as it is much easier to maintain. As the damage is done I can’t see the point of re-sealing it. Short term you could try indoor/outdoor rugs to cover up the worst bits. These rugs are made of recycled plastic but can be easily hosed down outside if they get mucky. The rugs below are from Next but there are sold everywhere. My stepdaughter had a new kitchen and had the old floor removed along with the UFH. It was a messy job and they moved out for a few weeks whilst it was done, but there was a lot of renovation work done at the same time. I do hope you find a solution. If you do decide to change the flooring, have a look at porcelain which is dead easy to look after. Good luck.

Seek advice from the heating contractor and check the air source will provide sufficient volumes of water at a high enough temperature. I am not sure whether such a system might require larger bore pipes. And check with the flooring manufacturer the suitability with such an underfloor system. There may be restrictions on the max temperature it can take.

This type of project seems
perfectly suitable for a warm-water underfloor heating solution contained
within a standard sand and cement screed. We've received universally positive feedback from our customers about the comfort
levels and running costs associated with this type of warm water under floor
heating.

In ground floor situations such
as yours the insulation beneath the screed should be 70mm ‘Celotex’ or
equivalent, or conform to Part L of the Building Regulations; so your 100mm of Celotex should be more than satisfactory to prevent downward heat transmission.

A standard 65mm deep sand and cement screed would be applied over the underfloor heating tubing. If a reduced depth of screed is required, pumped liquid screed may be used down to a thickness of 50mm.

Thanks for the info really appreciate it and have actually had a plumber round who was enthusiastic about and has installed it before.
