Kitchen Upstand, Glass Splash back and or Both!

I have just had the worktop installed into my new kitchen. The kitchen design is two L shaped sections the bottom of the L goes under a window.

The worktop is a dark grey quartz worktop and a grey glass splash back has also been installed along both of the longer walls which face each other.

We now have to decide if we want an upstand either:

A. 10 cm in grey quartz All the way around:

B. 10 cm in grey quartz just under the window sections

C. 10 cm in grey glass under the window sections to match the splash back

We want as contemporary look as possible, any advice greatly received.

Finish it off with glass under the window. the lines will run through a lot nicer than just having glass one side and then an quartz upstand. Will likely be the cheapest option too.

Otherwise go for quartz upstand around both sides.

with regards to the glass option, would you suggest just a 10 cm glass upstand or a larger piece to go right up to the bottom of the window sill?

Also would you say quartz upstands are more contemporary or is glass now the way people go or are advised to go.

My daughter has glass splash backs, painted on the back in white by the handy man who installed them. We had a glass splash back installed behind the hob which was professionally painted white and installed by the company specialising in this. I am still delighted by it and the ease of cleaning it - and it looks no better than my daughter's which was installed several years earlier than ours. Both look like new even now. Sometimes it is better to have what you really want - you will be living with it for a long time.

Glass splash backs are very easy to clean and maintain, no grout lines, not damaged by water at all. You do need to plan socket positions and can reduce costs by mounting sockets on undersides of wall cabinets, on the ends of unit runs etc. The glass can be cut around sockets, however. Any mirror or glazing company can do it, you can just buy plain tempered glass and paint the back of it to the colour you want before sticking it to the wall with silicone. Bear in mind the colour will look a bit different through the glass. I had Georgian wired glass back painted to make it look duck egg years ago. It had a slight texture and shimmer, made it look like tiny mosaic tiles but so much easier to clean.

Thank you for all suggestions. Fiona that is a good idea also - i'll have a look around. I particularly love your idea Planetharrywood of the gradual effect! Do you know where I could buy something to replicate this? Love the micro cement idea as well - pity you don't live closer! DAG Inter - i LOVE the idea of mirrors but backed away from the idea after being told about how much it is likely to cost! I think i perhaps should get a real quote though. Is there any software or perhaps even websites with samples that i could order to try and mimic some looks? Finding it hard to wind down on a decision.

Yeah go up to the window ledge. I would say tiles are probably number one and mirror is becoming more and more popular.

people tend to have quartz upstand if they're not having glass, mirror or tiles. I prefer it with out upstand on more modern kitchens as I like clean lines running through the kitchen.
