the dimensions of the space are appx 6.5m wide by 8.5m deep (depth from patio windows to kitchen wall)

There are lots of little antique stores in smaller towns. I'm not talking about junk stores, I'm talking about little trendy cute antique stores. We found our coffee table at an antique store, for cheap, and it's durable and gorgeous. That's where I would start. You have to look past a bad paint job in those kind of stores though, because it could easily be refinished.

Curtains look neutral as does the carpet. Personally I would keep these to start with and paint the walls a mid grey which might sound bold when originally you wanted white but it will be broken up a lot by the windows and kitchen. If it is possible to get rid of the peninsular the kitchen will feel less imposing. Since the kitchen is open to the living room I would be trying to find a cupboard elsewhere to house this although you can get washers with a timer which you can set when you go to bed and they finish as you get up in the morning. Rectangular dining tables work when you have a straight wall perhaps a circular table would be better here. I would use masking tape on the floor to help visualise furniture placement. Try putting a sofa in the middle of the room, with the side to the front door and it facing the opposite corner to the kitchen.

HI. It's quite tricky for a chair. In theory you should have 30cm space between the top of the table and a chair for your legs which obviously leaves a seat height of 30cm. i know I only have about 20 my kitchen table though which is fine so you could look for a tub style chair. Alternatively look at a footstool on castors although it won't be as comfortable for working. I know neither style are rustic but would work with the room.

I'm glad you like my tweaking. It's not worth worrying too much about the utility room at this point, better to sweat the big stuff. Seeing as this project is still a couple/few years away I now have enough to juggle it all around in my head in the mean time, and much will depend on the budget we have available at that time. I think we can let it lie at this point for now, thanks to everyone for your thoughts and opinions. The only thing I would still really like to know; is if anyone has a recommendation for (free or good value) software that will make it easier to make plans and 3d CGI models. As you can see, I like to work the Photoshop, but it's a bit cumbersome for this type of thing (I've used Sketchup - is that the best?) Andrew
