My new bedroom lacks warmth

I have recently moved up into our loft space. The back wall behind the bed is papered with designers guild copper pisani paper, the floors are wooden and the walls a light colour to match the background of the paper. I am used to sleeping in either a room with a fireplace or bay window or a pitched ceiling adding some interest. There is something wrong with the room and I don't know what it is. It opens to a bathroom that had metallic copper/brown tiles. I am not sure what to do. Please help b

Milliemae, Fear not! There is always something disconcerting about trying to sleep or live in a room that feels wrong but don't worry - it seems you've already identified the problem - you need more details to focus the eye upon. So: - first I would paint the doors and frames in a very slightly different shade to the walls - perhaps a shade darker from the wall paint and make it a gloss paint. Also the loft room door and the bathroom door should be given matching brass handles to add a touch of luxe and emphasise the en suite more. All doors need to be "trimmed" as they are currently flat, to give them a panelled effect - this is really easy to do - just requires trimming moulding bought from a hardware store/B&Q etc.

Next, you need a beautiful wall mirror - really quite small on the left side of the en suite door (find one from E bay, maybe antique and oval) to hang at head height. On the other side of the door you could hang an odd number of pictures/photos in tarnished looking bronze/gold frames (IKEA, E Bay, Oliver Bonas etc) in a vertical row. This all adds interest and makes you feel happy! Opposite the bed if you have room for it a book shelf at above head height and perhaps and framed painting/map or even a wider mirror or ornate hooks for clothes (check out Oliver Bonas online) would be wonderful and look like you had always been there!

I don't know if that is a blind (the black thing to the left of the bed) but I would try and replace it with a plain cream (to match the walls) roman blind (try Blinds2Go/Homebase). Last but not least, add more of those lovely cushions on the bed - 2 large ones - something pale grey/ pink/cream with a touch of gold to match the wall paper (BHS/John Lewis).

Good advice, Lisbet. Slight adjustments - especially adding a mirror, pictures and some beading on the doors - and it will come together beautifully. It's not far off being a success, Milliemae!

Hello matthuire, A nice looking place from the photos... I would say you could have shutters or blinds with tapes that can look like shutters if the thickness is 3cm or wider up to 5cm. Because you don't have a gr8 deal going on with frames and so forth, with those sash windows you can make the blinds work.. You could have a top recess fitting for wooden venetian blind with tapes by the looks of it. This would be my suggestion for something that looks like shutters but less expensive if budget is a consideration.... The windows lend themselves to the "header" (it's the boxy part that the wooden slats go into and is fixed to the top of window, in your case the top reveal?... Or you could have a gauzy sheer roman blinds and some lovely curtains.. : ))

How big is the room and how much light does it get? What flooring do you have on the landing as you may want to continue it into the bedroom? I would probably incorporate wood somewhere in the room as it adds warmth, there's also quite a few wood floors in your ideabook. I can see you like neutrals so it might also be an idea to incorporate a textured feature wall

thanks ladies, great advice, I actually haven't finished the detail yet, I have the same brass handles on all doors so that is comforting to know it will work. A Tv is being hung on the wall opposite the bed (got to have my TV!) I love the idea of a mirror and other photos. The windows currently have blackout paper blinds on them, was thinking of doing full length curtains that will be pushed all the way to the left of the room when open.

Hi. The bedroom looks lovely. I would also go for curtains if there's the room. I think a mirror would look good over the bed but it depends on where the tv is hung.. I think the bedside tables look a little dark. Perhaps some white faux flowers and other accessories but mix up the height. A throw with gold/bronze in for the end of the bed to bring the colour onto the bed and also some more cushions. If you have the room I'd add an upholstered chair in that corner by the bathroom. You could also add a small vintage wooden stool by the corner of the bath and perhaps a rug for more texture which will add warmth

Hi, Milliemae, I love the furniture in the room. The two doors with plain walls make the room a bit harsh and cold. Maybe an oval wood mirror could help?

I would add some table lamps, try ikea for an angle poise or something similar, it will add dimension and mood lighting. Also add some photos in there, I like to stick to black thin frames this will make it nice and cosy

Got some paint samples today to change the wall colours. Will keep you posted. Also looking at covering the headboard and adding a warm throw.

I would change the bed cover to something pale gold or pale pink in a velvet or something luxurious. Add some additional cushions maybe in the pale pink or gold as they seem to be your colour tones. Definitely add bedside lamps, mirror & a couple of pictures. Good luck.

Hi Miiliemae, You have some good foundation pieces to start which is good. I would avoid pink on the walls as it can be very cold in our climate and I don't think it works well with the gold in the wallpaper. Deep Pink in your accessories, including headboard, curtains, throws cushions is fine. I would keep the doors and architraves the colour they are and pain the walls in an olive green tone, for example Colortrend Cooks Garden. This shade will give richness back to the gold which the cream colour is robbing from it. It will also compliment your bedside lockers and your pink accessories. I would carry this colour into the en-suite as it will really make those tiles shine!! Good luck!

In terms of your window fixtures i'd suggest a roman blind with a cream or off white colour to match the current wall colours, possibly add in interlining and it will provide thermal properties. The black you have currently makes the room feel colder than it should do, you can have the same light blocking properties of a dark fabric with blackout linen.

Hi Milliemae, It looks gorgeous so far! I would definitely agree with the lamps suggestion. Have you considered some planting? It can make a room feel much more loved and plants are very restful in a bedroom. Perhaps consider ferns, orchids or a tall bamboo (these don't take up much space as they grow vertically rather than horizontally)

Looking good Milliemae, I love the latest mood board make sure you update us all. I have the same wallpaper in silver in our bedroom and I love it :)

Maybe put a white shabby chic mirror up you're headboard would be nice it'll give a great definition of the room.
