What works better in a large living area? There are many delightful floral wallpapers to choose from, from gentle pastels to more bold colours.

Plain wallpapers are just as effective and work well along side floral patterns, especially when creating a feature wall.

This is such a hard poll. How can one choose as for every beautiful floral there are numerous plains which also hold their own.

Not to mention geometric, abstract, animal patterns.

thanks for the advice, I'd never thought of the black accents at all (definitely going to do the pictures) , or the foot stool, I'm not sure about a cover but again not something I'd have thought of on my own, definitely things to start looking at, I'm keeping my eye out for the right greeny curtains and a mirror, keep thinking of a whitey/ cream one but not sure now! the pictures were good to look through too...hopefully I'll get you some after pictures in a while! I'm glad I asked for advice, many thanks!

Hi Catherine, You have a lovely open plan kitchen and lounge, but as you say, it lacks punch and interest. Since you're stuck with the stainless steel kitchen for the time being, you need to work with it and have some fun. A symmetrical arrangement of stainless steel shelves either side of the splash back for the cooker would allow you to put up interesting bottles, plants, china, etc. What about painting this wall a bright colour like Seville Orange from Crown and the other walls in natural white. You could also paint the base of the island in the Seville Orange. In the seating area, use the orange colour and some others like plum or blue-grey in fabric patterns, have cushions made up for the seating area. Also an area rug large enough for the front feet of your sofas and the coffee table to sit on with colour would brighten up this area. It's unfortunate that the TV is blocking a French window. Can it be moved somewhere else, perhaps the bay if the bottom shutters are never opened? Plain blinds & Patterned curtains or vice versa?

Hiya, The simple answer to your pattern/plain dilemma is - whichever you like! The beauty of layering blinds and curtains together is that you have double the choice, and we like to mix things up with patterned curtains and plain Romans, and vice versa. It all depends on the fabrics you fall in love with. Patterned curtains below make a feature of the bay window as a whole, really accentuating the lovely feature. Alternatively, below, the curtains almost blend in with the wall, so you could always choose light dove grey curtains, and opt for a pop of pattern with the Romans. From your pictures, it looks like a vintage-inspired floral in a light colour would suit your room down to the ground. It really depends how much a feature you'd like the window to be. Of course, you could always opt for a pretty pattern and a statement shade plain. There's nothing to stop you even from going for a double pattern. While you might not want to go for full-on designs, in this coastal bedroom, the soft designs of both the curtains and Roman blind actually work really well together. Sounds like your wallpaper is quite busy so I would keep the rug fairly simple not to take away from that. I would go with a plain grey or one with a a very subtle print. Key is to go with something understated I feel.
