Love the dishes

Love the colorful cups and fluted plates on the stainless shelves. Who makes these? Also would love to know the grout color. About to have subway tiles installed and having trouble picking the grout color. Thanks!

Yes, those are vintage MacKenzie-Childs dishes, bowls and mugs. Unfortunately the new owners have retired the featured patterns that are pictured here.

I think if you have enough space for a double bowl sink - one to wash in and one to drain in - that can be covered by a chopping board - that may be a compromise that will keep draining dishes in their place and the ability to cover up with a chopping board if unexpected guests arrive or if you need the extra workspace ... We have different guidelines in UK for cookers in Islands to those in USA and so in most cases that's ok too - although they do need to be sensible - think about fat splashes etc - if you are using the island as bar seating too ! Speak to a professional kitchen planner in your locality for the best advice to suit your location !

Cook most days - like others above, well into slow cooker season now and always have it bubbling right to the top so that I can decant into portions and freeze for later on. Have lots of crumbles in the freezer - love a blackberry and apple crumble in the middle of winter and remembering the lovely sunny days in late summer when we went out blackberrying! Favourite cake at the moment to cook is lemon drizzle and have had a run on cooking roasted vegetables and roast lamb for guests recently - found a lovely recipe of balsamic vinegar, olive oil, chopped rosemary and thyme for the vegetables to be marinaded in beforehand! Yummy!

A microwave oven is the device I'd find difficult to live without. Rechargeable batteries are so useful. LED lightbulbs. I can remember the days when the choice was between a 40W, 60W or 100W filament light bulb. Now there is so much choice and variety including ultra low energy bulbs like the G9 LED lightbulb of 1.5W I use in a table lamp (gives out the equivalent of 10W). @whirligig - I'm another fan of using a squeege in the shower. It's so quick and easy to keep the shower clean.

Agree with Jonathan - lots of choice on auction sites and mostly reclaimed so absolutely the best choice in terms of environmental impact. (Also from a cost point of view too!). There’s also a few new traditional styles that have soap draining areas (from what I can see, they are mainly recessed areas that have a draining point, so not strictly a soap dish). Heritage is just one brand that have several models that might fit the bill. Sadly I think all options are more traditional styles. If you want a more contemporary look, there’s loads of nice soap dishes on the market.
