Bedroom floorboards?

What's the secret of great bedroom floorboards?! I've seen some houses where they look outstanding and others where I am left scratching my head! We would like to have bare floorboards in our bedrooms but have paint splashes all over them. Hubby is happy to do the work but doesn't know how to make them look great. Any tips would be greatly appreciated as he is planning on letting loose in 2 weeks time! Also, do you have any suggestions for a varnish or an oil that will last? Many thanks.
