Thanks kerrydonn and minnie 101 for getting back to me with your comments. I thought it was going to be a struggle to have this new room as kitchen, diner and family area too which is why I thought I'd see what others have to say. The extension we are having is only 3m x 5m as the other 2m is coming from half of an existing dining room and kitchen to make the whole area 5 x 5. At the moment we have a massive dining room and fairly large kitchen but they are separate and if we knock through we just end up with the 2 rooms, plus utility & cloakroom downstairs, and that just wouldn't be big enough. So the plan is to split the last 3rd of the dining room and kitchen off and use that together with the new extension to make one big room. The part of the dining room left will become a spare bedroom and ensuit and the part of the kitchen left will be corridor with a big boot room/storage. It was have lots of cupboards and storage and as it leads into what will be the new extension it can house a fair amount of kitchen stuff too, along with coats, shoes, hoovers, mop - all that stuff you never have anywhere for it to go. I guess we'll just have to wait and see to make final decisions once the structure starts to come together. Bye for now.

Hello Mrs L, I personally love galley kitchens and a long run could be fantastic with an island that morphs into a dining table. It could be a straight run like the galley or with a more interesting configuration, I like cantilever and other more interesting designs that offer interest and give you a talking point.. It's not just another island with a set of bar stools on one side.. Have a think about how you cook and move around the kitchen.. Do you want to do a lot of entertaining and would it benefit you to face your family or guests when you're at the range for example... So should you have the cooking element on an island.. Look at the orientation too as this can often indicate how and where things can face.. Make a list of requirements with appliances and then have a think about the look you want to achieve.. There are lots of ways to create a magnificent kitchen that has a bit more substance to it.. Textures and interesting cabinet fronts can also make a feature.. : ))

Bifold doors 3.6m opening - are 1.2m doors too heavy?

In a previous house we had 3x1m aluminium bi fold doors. All doors stacked outside to the right. I loved them but I think anything larger than 1m panels would have been too heavy and unwieldy. One of the panels was our back door and clipped onto the second door to secure it. But a glass panel of 1.2m is a big door to be opening on a windy day. I would go for the 4x 1m option. On a warm sunny day it will be lovely to have that large opening. Ours were SE facing and some days they would be open from 7 am to bedtime. We only had one issue with them. Sometimes in hot weather they would swell and be difficult to close until they cooled down. However I have never heard of this happening before.

Hello I cannot quite make out the stairs. Do you step onto the landing just outside the children’s bedroom? I ask because I was wondering if you could gain some space there. Failing that you say you have built an alcove into the next bedroom for a cupboard which I can see on your plan. It may be a kerfuffle but could you revisit that and extend it all the way to the window wall? I was thinking that you could then fit a cot in there with drawers or cupboards underneath. If there is such a thing. You could then have a cabin bed for your 11 year old in the location it is now. The cabin bed and similar set up for the cot would hopefully compensate for losing the wardrobe.
