Has anyone tried the three sister planting method in their SFG?

I only have one 4x8 bed and it's completely enclosed in chicken wire due to squirrels. Out of 32 squares, I can only use 28 because I had to make a path for me to stand on while tending to the bed (inside).

Would it be okay if I dedicate 4 quares to three sisters method of planting? This will be the north side of the bed.

I'm also growing 4-5 indeterminate tomatoes and some greens and herbs in the same raised bed.

I'm really hoping this can be done!

My first year SFG I did try this. The pole beans grew up the corn stalks and hog tied them. Nothing happened with the squash. I hand pollinated the few ears of corn I harvested. Decided this was not a good method.

So funny! I'm planning to paint the bannister at the new house (TNH) black and am veering towards painting the treads and risers black too... I've been searching for images of black staircases on Houzz and putting them in my entrance hall ideabook. They are few and far between. In your case, I think, with your white walls, maybe the stairs white and the bannister black? (Assuming the white walls continue up the stair walls enabling the b/w contrast.) You've already put black firmly into the equation, adding some more may give more reason for the black rad cab. In my case, there is a very off-centre radiator that could so very easily have been directly opposite the front door in TNH which is rather annoying as it stuffs up the focal point. We are leaving here with every radiator covered with a cabinet - and going to TNH that has loads of radiators ...but no cabinets! Yes, the work ahead is daunting - especially since the area of Ireland we're going to is very basic and not full of DIY resources, etc. I keep thinking I'll paint TNH white - to make things simpler(!) But try as I may colour keeps wandering through my mind! Lovely to be in touch again!

I'm back - lots of 'stuff' went to charity, house looking better but still a loft full! That will change as I'm selling loads to support both my Church funds and a children's charity which I'm cutting off my hair for!!! They make wigs for children who've lost hair due to cancer. I've got about 10 inches so far and I'm hosting a supper, auction and haircut night in the spring - want to grow a couple of inches more for 2 wigs. It costs the charity £350 per wig so need twice that & I'll be a happy shorthaired bunny. My paid helper is a little prone to not quite finishing jobs so next week it's that, then up in the loft to have a good sort. I WAS a compulsive shopper - she's put paid to that and made me see sense - so all of my beautiful items, brand new, tags on, have to go!!!!! Cathartic or what!

We had a relative stay in our home for one night as she was moving on after, we live at the side of a railway line in a two bed ( everybody starts from somewhere) but we are used to this, a train only takes 30 seconds to pass so don't really notice it, my wife and I left for the day to go to work and left our guest to lock up on leaving, we had cooked the evening meal the night before and left her instructions on where everything was for breakfast. We both thought that all was fine until talking to another relative and found out that she would never stay with us again as she got no sleep due to the trains, walls were so thin she could hear everything inc plumbing noises heating kicking in and so on, and to this day she has not been back!

Thank you for everyone's comments, had no idea this thread would prove so popular when I started it. We are plastering this week and we have finally bought most things for the kitchen. I did find some real 'finds' though if anyone is looking. Not sure where you are based, but regarding electrical goods we researched all our own and narrowed down our list, and once we had that we looked online for the best prices for each appliance. Instead of buying from lots of different places we took it to Bentalls, who not only matched, but also cost us less, and beat some online prices with a good 'deal' price they also then will hold on to them until you need them, but if anything goes wrong you have 'bentalls' rather than several online dealers to return items to. RDO Appliances also do this if there is one near you, but i'd advise you to research prices first. Another thing we found was inserts for the kitchens. Through our kitchen supplier these were expensive, bin inserts, pull out drawers, pull out larders, even the pop up sockets, sourced seperately through ebay and online we managed to save quite a lot of money by doing this, so our fitter will still have the right things on the day, but we are not getting the inserts from the supplier. What else..... erm kitchen worktop, unbelievably the exact same worktop, same material, same cut outs etc.. same sizes differed between suppliers by 3k! so do shop around for your quartz and granite.

Corn is hard to get good pollination in smaller plots, you can substitute sunflowers for a "trellis" although they are nutrient hogs so plant any tomatoes or peppers further away.

Abundant Design has a good idea about using sunflowers as a trellis for the beans. However, trying a three sisters garden in only 4 square feet would be hard to do. Sunflowers and beans are definitely doable in that space but you'll probably have to omit the squash. If you could use the entire bed for the three sisters you'd have a better chance at success and would be able to plant the traditional beans, corn, and squash together (although I realize you'd be sacrificing valuable growing space doing so).

On another topic, is there any way you could bump out the enclosure two feet from the bed to give you walking room around the bed instead of having a path inside it?
