How to paint an open living/dining/kitchen area?

Hate beige. New home has all beige walls. The living, dining, kitchen area is all connected and very open. I'm not sure how to paint the different sections. Do I use all one color?

I have bold color choices selected for the bedroom/guest rooms (Teal) and I tend to prefer dark grey or other dark/bright colored walls...but is that too much to darken this entire area? There is a separation on the wall between living/dining so would it make sense to do two different colors there or should I keep it all the same?

Any/all color advice is welcome. I'm paralyzed here!

I'm not a designer but I just painted my dinning room Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore and it looks fabulous. It's a warm grey so it goes well with the brown in your home, check it out you won't regret it.

If you aren't afraid to go bold, orange would be nice in this space and is very current. You don't need to paint all the walls, pick one or two focus walls for your pop of color and then balance the room with colorful prints on the other walls.

I agree with many of the suggestions above, especially that there's too much furniture in the living room. You're going to hate me for saying this but I think there's too much clutter and busyness overall for such a small space. I'd radically reduce the number of pictures and knick-knacks in both rooms – especially the living room – and move the ones you keep to less prominent places. I'd also take the coat rack and cookery bookshelves out completely, and replace the busy parquet flooring with either not-busy plank laminate or a simple-patterned or solid rug. Finally, I like trees but that spidery palm tree is hideous IMO.

I'm doing all I can to stop it from crashing but no luck yet! I've lengthened the island from 3.2M to 3.6M to increase the storage for the kitchen but agree the island should be moved down slightly. I'd like a really large seating area but will have a play around to see how I can make this area work better as the settee is a little bit close to the island! I've always wanted a formal seating area and will have the space to do this but may be able to get away with 2 settees rather than the 3 I had my heart set on!! I'd put the TV on that wall so I could see it when I was in the kitchen cooking! But it would be better placed on the other wall for people sat at the Island to see. Your points are so helpful! This is the most productive day I've had in a while!! And I've just watched the George Clarke show 'Ugly House to Lovely House' to see the Crittall windows and I love them!

Thank you for your response. We had plans pretty finalised until we found out that we can keep just that long wall into the large space as it is a load-bearing. There is an opportunity to put a door in though. I am attaching what it looked like with all the walls that we can now remove. We have also been tinkering with ideas which I am adding as well. I added some comments on the plans as well. What we want to have is a dining area with a large table that seats 8-10 people. We want enough space for two people to work and cook in the kitchen. Thus, we were thinking of an island or an L-shape workspace coming out. We'd like to have a utility room to have space for all the cleaning utensils. Washer and Dryer will be upstairs in a separate laundry room. The living room is nothing formal but an area to relax and watch TV. We'd like to have an L-shaped cough in there for a family of four (2 kids under the age of 10).

Might be an idea to add the table size too into your spec ... you can add it as a comment on here . There are some lovely people who might be available to plot this whole floor out for you ... this is the sort of thing we do as part of our concept planning service too - but unfortunately we are already booked up this week ! No no spare time - sorry !

Since there is a good definition between dining and living room, what about the same color but in two different shades? Say the living room a richer/warmer shade and do the dining/living room with a lighter shade. That way there would be flow, but still definition. That would also not overwelm/overtake the space with a color. I also like the idea of one or two focus walls.

Use the columns as "dividers" to stop and start new color. Look at the Affinity Colors by Benjamin Moore. You have a fairly neutral palette, so you can do great combos- just depends on your personal taste and preferences. Ex: "Urban Nature" (a pleasing muted green, which works well with grayish blue) "Coastline" and trendy yellow "Wasabi"
