What is the "primer?"

Yes, all side coverage is an often overlooked means of stabilization and hidden deterioration. We all know about indoor and outdoor primers for painting indoor drywall & trim, and outdoor PAINTED wood surfaces. However, what was the "primer" mentioned in the caption? Apparently not application of the Sherwin Wm stain.

Depending on the product institutions whether or not to use an acrylic or oil based primer, I use either Muralo universal primer, which is the acrylic or Muralo x200 or the Benjamin Moore Arborcoat linseed oil primers. This particular deck was the Universal.

This is certainly a "best practice" that is probably not typically used. The same is true for painting interior wood doors. Best practice is to at least prime (and preferably paint also) both the lower edge and the upper edge, thus diminishing expansion & contraction with humidity changes.

If it's light colored you can probably get away with a regular primer. If it's dark colored it's worth investing in a benjamin moore grade primer - while that will be more $$ up front, you will use less of it in the end. Wash off the grime and dirt buildup with some T.S.P. Wash walls Check all the seams of the wallpaper to make sure they're not starting to let go and check for bubbling. Repair as needed. Prime (thinner primer = more coats, let dry well between coats) - oil based primer will hold best regardless of the type of wallpaper Then paint and you're done. Good luck. Before you get into too much work and $, maybe try a small area first, let it dry a few days, then see if you can chip it off with your nail. If you can, you'll have to try a sealer and all first, but at that point, it's probably worth the time and effort to just peel off the wallpaper and wash off the glue instead of trying to paint over it.

Yes you can. To be honest, I slap the zinsser on and then two coats of really good undercoat and sand that. I always use Rustins undercoat which is water based and then if possible go over with oil based top coat. Others may have other recommendations for which undercoat. I find the people at Brewers are generally really helpful as they are constantly dealing with trade customers. I bought this tool on a recommendation and it is really useful for defluffing the edges of painted mdf. My house was full of conker brown varnish and I painted over veluxes with zinsser and it really works. It stinks (contains meths) and it with ruin the brushes but it's good stuff.

As above if you just buy the cheapest of cheap emulsion and water it down, make sure the watered down mist coat is not a vinyl and just a bog standard cheap emulsion, any pale colour will do so either a cheap brilliant white or even check the bargain shelf of your local store for a colour someone has had mixed and not wanted. Then yeah two or three topcoats of your chosen colour can go straight over that once its dried of course. This is all just to make sure the new paint doesn't peel off and gets a good adhesion to the new plaster. Good luck and share some photos when done. Ohh and the mist coat will go everywhere and you will get covered in it so make sure to cover anything that you don't want to get covered in paint spots!!
