Need ideas for decorating a very large bedroom?

I have recently built a very large bedroom and need to choose how to decorate it. There are four sky lights on the roof and a medium sized corner window. I would like to go for some colour as most of the rest of the house is done in grey tones. All advice welcome, Thanks

There is lots to consider when decorating a room or deciding on colour. The number of windows is one of them but we would also take into account the light that comes into those rooms (is it northern light, south light, is it cold or warm), when do you use the room? what artificial light is there? what are your colour prefrences? what items are you placing in the room?.. the list goes on.

By thinking about all of these elements individually, we can create a space that is right for you and use colours that work and are functional with the surroundings.

For that reason I would always suggest seeking advise from a professional interior designer or colour consultant (we are available for a chat if you would like).

If you choose to look at colours yourself, remember to paint your samples onto lining paper and tape to each of your walls, leaving on each wall for 24 to 48 hours, this will allow you to view it in all lights and at all times of the day.

It is easy to say a colour looks great when you purchase it on a saturday morning but after painting you realise your only ever use the space in the evening light and it changes the look completely.

Ok I'll do that, thank you!! I think the wardrobe i was thinking of getting is just 1" too big... It might still work though. And I'll definitely consider that thanks :D I was hoping I'd downsize my wardrobe and clutter but I probably won't be able to :P I was also wondering if I got a large floor mirror, something to be leant against a wall or attached to the wall, where to put it... It's just a small detail though, I'm sure I'd be able to work things out better once I'd painted the bedroom and moved in etc!

You could perhaps still have a walk in wardrobe and ensuite - think about it like it's an upscale hotel room. Are you a bather or a showerer? The answer will dictate what you want in your ensuite. If the ensuite is more of a wetroom than an actual bathroom it won't take up as much square footage - baths tend to be bigger than shower enclosures and if you want a bath, then there's one in the main family bathroom in your plan, so go for a deluxe shower. http://www.houseplanshelper.com/master-bedroom-floor-plans.html has some good advice and potential room plans including ensuites. There's one where the ensuite and walk in are along one wall which leaves the rest of the room for the bed. Based on your plan, you might lose the windows on one side for the ensuite and wardrobe, but you'd still have the big patio doors for light. You could have it arranged so that you walk through the wardrobe to access the bathroom. Pocket doors mean you wouldn't have to worry so much about the swing into the room. I'd also have the bathroom sharing the same wall as the existing bathroom so there's less plumbing and drainage work to do. Don't get a macerator/SaniFlo; we had one when we moved in and it made so much noise that we couldn't flush or shower or wash in the evening/night for fear of waking the neighbours. You can also get those beds where the TV is in the footboard. That might be a space saver. If you're clever with the layout of the ensuite and walk in wardrobe you might still have room for a nice sitting area (always good for reading in peace or getting dressed/undressed) and a dressing table/desk - your current plan seems to have a lot of unused floor space - though that might be what you're after. The dressing table could be under the window next to the patio doors. It would be close to the door, but a nice stool that tucks under the countertop would work - how often is the door and the dressing table going to be used at the same time? :) Edited To Add: Here's a wee mockup - I guesstimated the window and door sizes and placements and it's an Ikea Hemnes double bed and side tables.

I think you’ve got the bones of a lovely bedroom. Personally I would paint all the walls not a statement wall. The colour would depend on your room orientation and preference but just think if your room faces west it get warm evening light so anything red toned will be more red and anything facing east will get blue morning light so blues and blue greens can look extra cold. Get lots of samples paint big squares across a visible corner and your main focal point. I would also change the mirror add a slim shelf or fireplace surround underneath. Add some art above the bed and update your ceiling light and bedside lights. If you post some images that help represent your style the kind people on here could help suggest some items.

Sorry I forgot to reply..I like the dark furniture in the 2nd pic i posted. ikea Hemnes is a black brown which may be worth a look but I’m not sure how size compares to yours. i tried painting the walls in a similar colour but it came out rather dark! Your curtains are rather lilac so have tried adding more purple tones. I can’t photoshop btw, made worse due to the camera angle (!) but it was just to give you an idea. Anyway, i would layer the bed with throws and cushions and consider adding a pendant light, the feather ones are great for texture and can be hung a bit lower than normal as no damage if your head hits. Plug in wall lights could be an alternative to lamps. Linen bedding is also great for a cosy feel (used with a plump duvet A blanket box may fit at the end of the bed for extra storage if needed
