One Armchair or Two?

I'm trying to develop a bit of a Scandi theme in the living/dining area of my new house. Ignore the dining table, which is actually a garden table hidden by the cloth! Saving up for that one. The red chair is going, but I am trying to decide whether to have 1 big armchair or 2 smaller ones, and what colours would go with grey that reflect the Scandi theme? I have the mustard swivel, seen just to the right of the bookcase, would that work? But then what would go with that? The wood burner does restrict the room width and chair placement. I am going round in circles, any help gratefully received!

Hi, I think your scheme is going to work very well. I tried to imagine the dining room table gone and replaced with something a little more Scandinavian, with maybe mustard colour seats, Grey or White. I think the Armchair will look good in Mustard to bring together the other end of the room with your Swivel chair. The coffee table will need to go as it's just to modular to fit in with the theme. However, the pale wood of a scandinavian coffee table is going to sit very well on your rug and will pick up on the floor colouring, blending it all together. Add some funky cushions to the sofa, job done.

Ikea also do some really nice good value rattan chairs that would compliment your scandi scheme too.

I think this room is brilliant (not only because of the potential of the size) because it gives you the chance to have two areas with different purposes. One for sitting on front of the fire/chatting to guests and a second for cosying up with your partner on front of the TV. Agreed with Ellie. On the left side, you could have another sofa (or armchairs) perpendicular to the fireplace, with a coffee table and armchair opposite. I like your idea of having two carpets: One under the coffee table, the other opposite the fireplace on far side. I would add a long side board (maybe an oak cupboard, with 4 freestanding legs) in the left corner for shoes, hats etc. It can change purpose if you decide to move it in future. You could add a fancy coat rack (or wall mounted coat hooks) between the two doors on the right. Are there options to put this beside your front door? In between the fireplaces I think a bookshelf would look lovely. If you’re more a kindle fan than a real book fan, use it for your favourite pictures you haven’t had the chance to hang, and vases and pots. You could map this out before buying more furniture, using newspapers or magazines roughly the same size. (Or use the Houzz feature “view in your room” to test furniture you like on the website in the areas). Also get yourself a measuring tape- this will prove indispensable when looking at furniture before packing it off home to find it doesn’t fit. I realise I rambled off a lot there so I hope this makes sense. I just saw so much potential in this room. Hopefully you manage to get it just how you like.

Hello, I have just read your remit again. You are hoping for two bedrooms, reception, kitchen and bath/shower room but you cannot extend further than existing bathroom. I am really not sure that is feasable. Switching the bed and reception around would give you access to the rear from the reception with one bedroom at the front. You could move the bathroom to the middle (on the other side of the relocated bedroom) then combine what remains of the kitchen with the old bathroom (squaring it off with an extension to make a kitchen with a small dining space looking oit to the rear. All this is dependent on structural walls and cost implications. Your home would be better configurated but it would still be a one bedroomed flat.

Claire, I am so relieved you got the “don’t do it” message!😂. The combination machines truly are awful. Daisy’s constructed cabinet is a really good way of making them “integrated”, just make sure you consider any surrounding ventilation space requirements. We “semi-integrated” our freestanding units by creating a drawer front to cover the gap between the top of the units and the worktop. The drawer front is actually on a side hinge, so behind it we have low height but deep storage for breadboards, pizza stones, etc. I had intended to make actual drawers, but then realised it works just as well storing things directly on top of the units.

You could add another small window for the new room. A good builder can easily do that for you, but as it’s the front of the house you need to check with the planning Dept just in case. I had a downstairs back door removed, filled in at the bottom and a new bigger window fitted in my kitchen. Yes you will need lighting, sockets and some form of heating and obviously a new entry door to the room.

I think a rattan chair would indeed be the best option to get your Scandi look as I feel like your mustard swivel chair is more modern than Scandi. With a nice sheepskin thrown over it you'll already be almost there! I would have to agree that the coffee table for me don't feel Scandi, mainly because of the black legs which feel too harsh compared to how soft Scandi should be. If you are keen to keep two small tables that would be fine but I would go for light wood side tables for example.

And paint the dog white! ;-)

I love the red chair and footstool ! I like the idea of a swivel arm chair to be able to see our to the garden admire the fire or watch tv.
