What type of curtains or blinds for this bedroom?

Hi Houzz!

I've finally moved in and desperately need curtains or blinds for my bedroom.

The bedroom is tiny, so I thought against curtains which can take up too much space... But still open to the idea.

Blinds.
I need them to block out light and also be able to block out some sound and provide some insulation.... Because unfortunately the windows are single glazed and there is sometimes a lot of noise on my street in the middle of the night.

Any recommendations on what to get and where from?

It's s lovely room! I would go for long curtains, with blackout and insulating linings, but only if you could draw them completely away from the window when you open them (so you can see the nice radiator and window) They might block heat from your radiator, so not a solution if it's usually chilly in there. You could fit Roman blinds with blackout linings or I've seen good reviews of Duette blinds - they do blinds with insulating properties. Or combine the two! Blinds and lighter curtains (which won't block radiator heat).

In order to insulate and block out sounds curtains (I'm sorry to say) would be the best option... but in a small room try using long ceiling to floor curtains to draw the eye upwards, and using a light color can makes them more subtle. although time consuming sewing in linings is cheaper than buying the already in and means that you get the benefits of bulky curtains while they are still relatively contained.

Hi, I would go for curtains in the colour of the walls. Perhaps with a ton-sur-ton (almost same colour) pattern in them. And then paint the wall behind the bed in a dark blue. (Sorry for the sloppy mockup, I was in a hurry)

I like what you've done so far! My suggestion is to go hunting for vintage saris on ebay, and make a blind from that. I think they're beautiful and while they wouldn't suit every project, they certainly would suit here. You'd struggle to match the green, but cream, pale grey, or heavily embroidered with gold or silver thread would all look great, or perhaps maroon or dusty pink if you want a contrast. If your window is wider than one sari width it might take some juggling to take advantage of the most embroidered end, but I think it would be well worth it.

I love all the green! and would definitely stick with that wallpaper. Bedding and curtains is a good opportunity for some cream or ivory tones to lighten the room, maybe some textured linen? Sofa could be different again - if you're feeling bold, a copper velvet would tie in with the walls. otherwise ivory will always look smart.

Hi Shifali,

Nice bedroom. If you are a person who feels cold very easily I would go for roman blind as long as the window, so it won't stop the heat. If not go for a long one. It would better buy a sound block curtains

Roman blinds are a great way to
dress a window, the choice of fabric can make them look formal with simple
clean lines or more relaxed and informal. They work well in Bathrooms,

Hey there Shifali!
I know you're probably overwhelmed with options by now, but I'd love to suggest another option to you that I think will fit the bill perfectly!
Have you heard of pleated blinds before? They go by a few different names, but we call them DuoLight & DuoShade. They're made up of honeycomb pockets which capture heat, and our DuoShade ones are foiled lined for even better insulation. You should find that these help with the issue of warmth. But that's not all. DuoShades are also blackout and do in fact help block out some of the external noise.
They can be fit into a recess so you wont lose any of the heat from the radiator.

I like the idea of Duoshades...but they look like they are panelled? you know that they let half the light in - is this true? I want it to look like a singular colour.

Not quite panelled @miss_mud. I've attached a photo that one of our customers sent in which may help the visualisation. From the side the blinds have a honeycomb structure, which gives the blinds an almost ridged style from the front. As the blinds are drawn further down, these pleats start to flatten out.
The DuoShade are completely blackout, it's the DuoLight blinds that filter some of the light through. You can order a couple of free samples using the link above to get a better idea of how the colouring looks.

From a radiator expert, long curtains are definitely a bad idea if radiators are directly under windows and the curtains can't fit behind them. You can end up paying to heat the window, whilst the room remains cold.

I would agree that floor length curtains, hung wide enough for the curtains to be drawn over the wall, completely off the window, to allow in as much day light as possible. Thermal curtain linings are toasty and sumptuous!

How about blackout roller blind fixed inside the window frame with a Roman blind over the top fixed outside the frame. And ear plugs (sorry - this doesn't address the street noise)! Both blinds could be raised during the day so wouldn't obstruct the lovely window or block the radiator.
