Views on these cushions. Do I need more/less of the mustard?

Clearly they require more careful arrangement but have I got the colour mix right?

I think you have definitely enough cushions and the colour mix is good, although the arrangement feels a bit 'disorganised' and busy as a result. What jars with it in my mind is the wooden coffee table, which I would paint. Either in a slate grey or a mustard, depending on how bright and lively you want to go. The purple glass also disturbs the harmony.

Is it better to add more of the same cushions so that there are two of each rather than singles?

First of all, you aren't clueless :) I would follow your gut and turn the couch to face the fireplace, put the TV on the oak box near the window, the armchair and side table over near the built in dresser, and the red cabinet between the two windows where the armchair was. I like both your pieces of art on the other side of the room. If the red cabinet is between the two windows, you might want to switch the vertical piece with the one that is on the wall above the dining table - just see how it looks. Actually, I think the bird painting could look really good above the fireplace - it will add visual height (as jonathan suggested) and brings some red to that side of the room and it has bits of black and charcoal to tie in the fireplace and the couch...... If you have the TV to the left of the fireplace, I'd move the map (I like it for personal reasons :). Anyway, you really want a mirror up there.... it's a bit tricky because the fireplace is off set. Something this shape would be fab because most other items in there are really angular, but this one is too big and the price is crazy: Otherwise maybe a couple of small mirrors that you can also off set and put in a group, which would also add height: I'd do three or five of different sizes and shapes. I actually like the rug size and colour - it ties in with the blinds and the taupe in two pieces of your art and has good texture. Add a few more cushions to the couch and armchair in a couple of different fabrics. Maybe some of these:

Some yellows that are described as mustard are actually more gold and they are quite nice. But what I see as true mustard to me is a revolting colour that reminds me of the content of new babies nappies. Sorry, I know that sounds awful but it's just what I see when I look at a jar of mustard or see anything that is the same shade. Maybe it doesn't help that I can't stand actual mustard, even the smell makes me feel ill so I guess some of it is the association between the two in my head. I wonder if fans of the colour tend to be equally as fond of the condiment and visa versa?

Hi Mira. I'm not sure re the blue, although I much prefer the 2nd, what do you think? (I probably need to shrink the art slightly but 3rd time attempting to post I won't!). I would probably put a dirty ochre/mustard, burgundy, splash of red (minus the solid cushions I posted before!) or a burnt sienna with the walls but hopefully colourhappy will help me out :) i really like all of the chests but I'm not sure they work. I'm not sure on your thoughts but I thought a George III chest could work but painted. Feels like sacrilege but if the wood isn't good it may be worth considering plus you can pick them up cheaply, I bought a really large chest from eBay for £300. I also like this Lombok one but struggling to find a light, cheaper version. A decorative tassel would add to the oriental look. The art in the 2nd pic is from Attiko art who can personalise colours for £75

Yes you could put mirror in front. It might be a bit disconcerting to catch sight of yourself when you look out? Clematis montana is great when is in flower but doesnt do much for the reast of the year, it can get huge and after a few years the stems will be very woody and not very attractive, so I would suggest planting it a way away from the wall so it doesnt take over. Could you post close up pics of the plants above the wall and the planting area?

Thank you. I don't know what happened to my other post explaining that the coffee table is going completely. The purple glass is just a scented candle and doesn't live there.

I think I might lose the dark grey square cushion, fourth in on the top photo. I then need to work out how to arrange them...

closer photos to show the colours. You can see the cushions which came with the sofa. The rectangular dark grey cushions are my old cushions and are looking a bit the worse for wear now.

This shows the watercolours on the wall from which I have taken the yellow and a shot of the other wall which is a work in progress. The units are going to be built in and will extend across the whole wall.

Behind the sofa next to the window will probably be a mirror. Under the bird pictures will be a sofa console like this with lamps on

I think the colours work really well and the dark grey provides a good link to the curtains.
Maybe try to arrange them as follows: large ones along the back, smaller ones in front, all straight, not at an angle. Makes it look a bit more orderly and formal, if that's the look you want.

I think what's missing is some colour on the walls - perhaps try a muted yellow on one of them?

Ha ha. It's taken me six years to persuade DH to allow any colour in and even now its only four yellow cushions.

I think you have enough cushions already. I would not add any more mustard cushions. If you want to create a more vibrant environment I would add two (no more) red or orange cushions. If you want to keep the room relaxing as already it is I would not add any other cushions I would just rearrange them as suggested by Room4Style

This room is just for tv and so the aim is that it's a relaxing comfortable area. It also opens up to the kitchen and so going from what everyone has said, I think it's just a bit of rearranging.

I'm toying with the idea of turning the coffee table into a covered footstool....

The other issue is that I was going to use these lamps on the sofa console but now that I've introduced the mustard colour, I'm not sure .

Judging form the photos I think the lamp should suits the sofa I think it would give a touch of sophistication

Hi. How's the painting going?! I would just try 2/3 cushions in each of the 3 corners of the sofa and see what you think. I like the lamps and think a yellow footstool would look great. Can't tell if its the pic but the table looks higher than the sofa? I think they work better when lower. I'm just wondering if the console and art would be better centred under that part of the sofa.., it doesn't look central in the pic, are you able to take a pic of the art with the sofa in? Do you have a wall opposite the window for a mirror?

I did the exact same thing with mustard cushions myself a few weeks ago, spent an eye watering amount on cushion (thank god my husband wasn't present!) and ended up taking most of them back as we could barely sit on the sofa for cushion, I went for the less is more approach and save hours in plumping and arranging time!

I actually think the colour of the coffee table works really well with the greys. Overall the colour scheme is lovely.

Hi Minnie

All the fascia is painted and new guttering is up. Exterior walls are being started tomorrow...

The bird pictures are centred on that section of the wall. The room was extended at some stage in the past and so there is a pillar about a third of the way along the wall. This is the section where the sofa console is potentially going to be. There's quite a lot of space on the right hand side of the sofa and I'm not sure whether it will look a little awkward. Still trying to work that out...

Table is higher than the sofa but we can chop a bit off the legs. The table is definitely not staying as it is.

As you can see I haven't yet rearranged the cushions!

The mirror was previously on the wall to the right of the bird paintings. I'm not sure whether to put it back there or next to the window.

Progress then! I bet you're nervous re the paint but think it was a good choice! I would have centred the art over that section of the sofa. Will the console be the length of that part of the sofa or not? Re the space, either a tall floor plant or a side table with a vase of faux tall stems? If you were to go for a tall bushy plant I'd have the mirror where it was, hung so that the centre of the art aligns with the centre of the mirror. If not, I'd try it by the window. The room has really been transformed!

The console was going to go from the left of the pillar to the end of the wall. The other option is to end it exactly where the sofa arm ends but then I have to rely on the kids not jumping on the sofa and pushing it around (which is a bit of an ask...)

Alternatively I could continue it on the left hand side of the pillar almost up to the window. Then it would run all the way along the back of the sofa. Joiner is coming tomorrow and so I need to decide really.

Plant in the corner is an idea, I hadn't thought of that. At the moment I just have a basket of throws.

Yes I am keen to see the paint on the exterior walls. I hope it was the right decision. I'll post a photo on that thread as soon as a section is done.

Have you tried pulling the sofa down so it's against that wall? You could then add a floor lamp the window end? If not, I think i would end it with the sofa (and rehang the art) or have the console both sides. I haven't seen that done but can't see why it wouldn't work. Look forward to the pics, I'm sure it was the right decision!

Its too big. The sofa basically extends the whole of the room, its enormous- about 3.5 metres. This was deliberate to make the room feel cosy and "den like".

To centre the bird pictures in the room or over the sofa back they would end up right against the pillar. Its difficult to describe but the pillar is quite large (sticks out about 30cm) and so it really chops the room into two sections. This is one of the reasons for potentially extending the console all the way from pillar to wall. The art would then be centred over the console with a lamp each side and the sofa would be offset to the left.

Hi Shelly, I really love the mustard you definitely don't have too much, but I think you need another colour too to compliment it. I think Mustard and Teal would look really great together.
