Kitchen ideas for my small LG open plan flat

Hello wonderful creative people. Here is my new lounge/kitchen/diner. I am due to move in soon and wish to change the kitchen (and general decor). I'd like a boho/eclectic/contemporary look. I like the shape of the kitchen so was just going to replace top and cupboard doors. I love raw natural wood so have an idea to do a wooden top, white cupboards and replace the metal pole (ew) with a gnarly bit of wood or maybe paint it? Or I was thinking a white top with charcoal doors? Any suggestions are gratefully received :-)

Hi Emma,

Looking at the photo the green in the recess is beautiful. I would you a similar color for the cupboard doors then a light wood worktop, then go crazy with the colors of domestic appliance. If money was not an object, I would apply an extractor above the hob, remove the top half of the kitchen unit so the living room get more light. I would buy a bigger bottom half kitchen unit similar colors of the recess (cupboards on both sides) and two breakfast chairs in traditional style. I would through away the tiny table and by one of those coffee table that can be turn into a proper table if it is needed. The couch would be in a neutral color, but I will go crazy with the cushions and domestic appliances .

What a lovely thing to able to plan a new home! Wish you lots of luck, there is nothing much wrong with the kitchen as it is, so I would try living in the space for a while before taking the sledgehammer to anything. It doesn't look as though the light is being blocked by the high kitchen units so maybe they could stay and have a wider surface fitted so that you could have a breakfast bar on the other side and do away with the dining table area. You could use the tall wall cupboard system that Ikea do to combine extraction and storage above the cooker. If you like wood, take a look on ebay for iroko worktops they are really lovely and chunky and look better as they age. The doors you can change easily for something funkier try kitchenwarehouse uk online for a great range of replacement doors. If you want something boho they do a range of glossy doors in contemporary colours.

You could have a boho look just by putting some colourful glasses in the see-through cupboard and lighting it.

Hope your move goes well, give it time to settle in and you can have fun with the space on any size of budget.

You have a lovely home to work with. I would say don't underestimate mirrors for making a room look twice as big. Have you considered giant mirrors, or mirroring an entire wall? How about the curved wall? I would pay attention to lighting also, as great lighting can make your home look a million dollars and more spacious. I would make a focal point with television resting on a gorgeous storage cabinet, place wall picture frames on wall where tv is placed, this will draw attention to the art and cabinet rather than the tv itself. I would get highback armchairs and use them for both dining and lounge seating with a sofa. I like those Victorian card tables on wheels, that fold up, multipurpose. Only buy furniture you absolutely love, don't follow trends, follow your heart, after all you want to feel good at home. Don't be half-hearted follow your dreams, be confident. When you fully execute your interior passion you'll be happy and others who come to your home will sense you and credit your style as being authentic, true to you and they will love it as much as they love you.

I don’t want to pour cold water on your plans but the soil pipe position dictates the location of your wc. You can get a macerator to allow a different wc location (I have had them with no problems) but they are quite unpopular on this site. I also feel that you are getting rid of the small wc only to make the shower room feel cramped. You should also check with an estate agent that the local market doesn’t demand a bath because you don’t want to cause problems on resale. As far as the open plan thing goes your open to the hallway plan won’t be allowed in anything other than a ground floor flat because of fire regs as you need a safe escape from bedrooms. I have an alternative suggestion which is to make the kitchen a shade smaller, make the WC bigger and add a laundry cupboard next to the wc. Of course any changes require budget. Do you have one in mind?
