Solar garden lighting in the UK - yes or no?

My patio and garden are pitch black at the moment so I'm looking into lighting options. Hardwiring to the exterior wall could be a bit of a challenge as I don't have a circuit nearby to tie into, therefore solar lighting seems to be the obvious solution. Does anyone have experience that they can share? With the natural light we're getting in the UK, does solar really work? Or do you end up sitting in the dark one hour into a cosy BBQ?
