What colour should our banister be?

What colour should we paint the banister?

Thinking black or white... Black to match spindles or white to match rest of stairs and lightness of grey walls. Need to make a decision by tomorrow so would love your opinions!

Nice banister! I would pick white personally. The black would stand out too much and the grey would blend in a little too much with the background. With white you're sure you're not making a mistake!

I would paint the post white and keep the bannister wood.

I would say you have 2 options: 1) paint as Pat says, but choose a nice dark matt colour, ( or I suppose White if that is you want, its a matter of personal preference), and handrail dyed and varnished MATT, or, stain / matt varnish the whole lot. Here, with discussion with client, and led by the client who wanted a low maintenance finish, the 300 yr old beams had been treated and left as natural, unfinished, and the new soft wood ( budget did not allow for oak or hardwood) was finished in stain and matt varnish - I thought it might not work, but the end result was pleasing to all and very very happy client. This expressed the new joiner from the older structural timber frame. What do you think?

Just thought I’d update now the job is finished. I went for a mid grey in the end. It seemed to have browner tones when I used the tester pot on the brown rails. Never mind, it still looks much more modern and the carpet is fairly worn so won’t last forever. Doing two colours is hugely time consuming with all the masking involved.

Changing the worktops to a light colour will make all the difference. I've just had a new kitchen installed and even in a small area - about 2.5 metre sq - having a white worktop has completely transformed the area. The previous matt black surface just absorbed all the light. I've painted the walls white as well (previously a creamy colour) and now the area is so bright I've had to buy a blind for the window! Therefore, I'd suggest staying with the layout and looking at the colours for your new kitchen rather than creating unnecessary openings that will mean you lose cupboard space or other rooms. It's not just style, but function that is also important, if the space does not work for you, you will soon fall out of love with the house.

I would paint them off black..... I think blue blacks looks great with wood , charcoal is forgiving but I am not keen on jet black- I think it cheapens the finish

I would paint booth the newel post and banister white to match the stringers it would compliment the spindles perfectly going black would be abit harsh

same colour as your steps! definitely!! Dnt paint is it a boring white.
