Only half a wardrobe: creative ideas needed!!

I had to have the new hot water cylinder installed in the spare room double wardrobe as it was too big to go in the cupboard where the old one was. Now I only have half a wardrobe. The question is how to creatively make use of this. How would I fit a hanging rail for example? Or other ideas - greatly appreciated!

Do you need hanging space?

Could you get a freestanding rack/shelving unit instead? Perhaps one of the slatted wood types and add hooks on the back of the door instead?

Or put a small coat stand in there, IKEA has a few small ones.

You could put a support side close to the tank with some shelving at low level maybe two and fix rail from existing socket to new supporting side to create the hanging space, bear in mind what access might be needed for a trades to come and fix anything or service any parts.

Hi Shas. I hope you don't mind me saying but the list of additional rooms and bigger rooms seems to have grown but there appears to be little opportunity to increase the footprint of the house. Do look to see if loft conversions have been done down the road to give you a master ensuite. To add the new extra bedrooms I think you would need a double height extension as the current bedrooms are just not large enough to create 5 rooms out of 3. Has anyone else done this down the road? If you were to extend double height you also need to allow for corridors and you'd need to think about getting light into the current bedroom next to the bathroom. In terms of an office and meditation room, where were you looking to put these? You could use the garage space but it is very narrow in any case and I would strongly suggest you keep garden access so you'd end up with rooms of 5ft width. I'm not a pro and don't want to put a dampener on any of your plans particularly with the imminent arrival (congratulations!) but maybe think about buying a house which has potential for significant expansion. Hopefully a pro will come along and prove me wrong! Do also think about resale, houses that are overdeveloped may not always make a return on your investment

Thank you ok this is what I think you may be able to do, If the platform can be removed the use this side (the widest side for two hanging rails one above the other approx 1 metre in between, On the narrow side, left of door, use this space to create shelving floor to ceiling this can follow along the back wall opposite the door with a supporting side to hold them. This gives double the hanging space and loads of shelf storage for bedding and the things already stored. The hanging side will only take up approx 600 mm depth from wall so you will also have space to store any freestanding tall items that will not fit on the shelves. Shelves could be spaced at 300 mm apart depending on what you need to store. Hope this helps.

Hi if I was to do this, I would stick to low furniture. A bit difficult if you need wardrobe space too. We are in the middle of our loft conversion, but we are putting the wardrobe out of sight, so it's not the first thing you see when you walk and blending the colours together with the wall.

Thank you for your comments @drpepe101 and @rosemonde. The kitchen on the new plan is how our kitchen is now, the new plan only includes a small extension to the rear. The kitchen is not actually that dark, the back of the house and garden is SW facing so luckily we do get a good amount of light. It also does not feel cramped but that is due to the fact that it has been badly designed with hardly any cupboards - the fridge/freezer and our food is currently in the 'office' behind the kitchen! So I definitely agree that in order to create a kitchen in that space with all the cupboards we need - it will end feeling cramped. I did really want to take out the wall and chimney stack that separates the current kitchen from the office room behind it. We have had three different architects to view the property and they all felt that whilst not impossible it would be a very difficult job. The wall (which is the original exterior wall) is 2 feet thick and is built from large blocks of local stone, as well as having the chimney stack running through the centre all the way up to the roof. I am now thinking the best solution would be a side return extension either for just the width of the kitchen (sketch attached) which would not require planning i believe as it would be under 6m or possibly a longer side return. I wouldn't necessarily need a separate utility if we are widening the kitchen as i could incorporate a washing machine etc in to the kitchen. I would like a downstairs WC somewhere though. Currently our shoes/costs are stored in the cupboard under the stairs. If we went with this layout i would like to create a better opening between the kitchen and existing dining area and put pocket doors or similar in between the lounge and dining room so we can close off the lounge to make it feel cosier when we want to.
