Thank you for everyone's comments, had no idea this thread would prove so popular when I started it. We are plastering this week and we have finally bought most things for the kitchen. I did find some real 'finds' though if anyone is looking. Not sure where you are based, but regarding electrical goods we researched all our own and narrowed down our list, and once we had that we looked online for the best prices for each appliance. Instead of buying from lots of different places we took it to Bentalls, who not only matched, but also cost us less, and beat some online prices with a good 'deal' price they also then will hold on to them until you need them, but if anything goes wrong you have 'bentalls' rather than several online dealers to return items to. RDO Appliances also do this if there is one near you, but i'd advise you to research prices first. Another thing we found was inserts for the kitchens. Through our kitchen supplier these were expensive, bin inserts, pull out drawers, pull out larders, even the pop up sockets, sourced seperately through ebay and online we managed to save quite a lot of money by doing this, so our fitter will still have the right things on the day, but we are not getting the inserts from the supplier. What else..... erm kitchen worktop, unbelievably the exact same worktop, same material, same cut outs etc.. same sizes differed between suppliers by 3k! so do shop around for your quartz and granite.

Julie have a look on YouTube on how to lay turf. There are some great tutorials on there. Soil needs to be raked to a fine tilth then trodden down before the turf is laid. Seed is much cheaper but I found it unsatisfactory as it takes ages to fill out and kiddies and dogs need to keep off it until it’s established, so turf would be quicker and easier. It would be easier to get a gardener to lay the turf, but of course that will cost more. Don’t put pressure on yourself, turf can be laid ideally all through the spring, so April and May would be ideal, but summer is okay as long as you water it when dry.

Agreeing with the ladies above. I'm sure your surveyor has weighed this up very carefully as there are many factors affecting the decision. For instance..........has the house had a damp proof course injected since it was built? If so, then you shouldn't incur the damp in the first place. People now have central heating, which, also keeps the walls dry. BUT................ Is the exterior rendered? and if so, what with? If it's been done with lime then you would still use lime inside so that the walls breathe. If rendered with lime outside, then damp can still get inside due to it's make-up. If not rendered, water could still penetrate the bricks if they're damaged / decaying or the pointing isn't perfect. Central heating would help keep it dry inside but it can't be used as a fail safe, neither could the damp proof course. You just get water trapped in the walls., and if it can't breathe it will cause damp. Basically, it's a mine field with old houses and I think you're probably best to listen to the expert.

Thanks for the insight. You’ve hit the nail on the head by clarifying whether the gravel will be contained. It won’t be as it’s part of a larger gravel-covered area so over time the gravel next to the troughs could be disturbed. That may in turn displace gravel under the edge of the troughs, dropping part of one or both and they will be too heavy to raise back up. I’ve settled on placing paving slabs on compacted earth for the troughs to sit on, then surrounding with gravel which will will also be sufficiently deep to cover the slabs. I may regret not deploying trenches, rammer and Type 1 – we’ll see. I’d better crack on with it...
