Fireplace for 1960's semi

We're part way through house renovation and need to decide what to do with sitting room fireplace. We recently ripped out the ancient backboiler and divided up the lounge/diner so we now have small contained sitting room -approx 4.5 x 3.5m.

What can I do with gaping hole where hideous gas fire used to be? Had thought about woodburner but room is small so think wouldn't use it as heat output would be too much. What else would work in 1960s semi? Not looking for anything 'retro' more like cosy grown up sitting room. But don't want it to look too 'fake'. Ideas appreciated!

This is a gas fire and would look great in a 1960s home. Or how about getting a wood burner and only using it a few times a year more for effect than heat (I regret not doing this!)

Hi, What a lovely place you have there. Bags of potential and some outside space too! I am with OnePlan I am afraid - I could do all the interiors bits and happy to make recommendations when needed but it is an architect or interior architect you will be looking for for any building work or planning. You could try the 'planning portal' if you have ideas you want to look into or even call your local planning office who should be able to point you in the right direction. Regarding interiors I would begin by looking at how you want to use the space. Spend a few days living in it and working out where you feel comfortable and like spending your time - what do you like, what don't you like and then start making some lists! All the best, Gina

Pick a colour that complements the neighbours, paint the wood. Put some trellis on the wood, paint same colour and grow a flowering climber there. Move the shrubs somewhere else (I like to not get rid of stuff that can be used elsewhere) perhaps off to the right and make the border into a more defined shape (a curve would look nicer. Fill with lavender and rosemary and pop weed suppressant and decorative bark or stone (bark is cheaper).

That looks more like a 1930s fireplace. We had the same in our living room and bedrooms. My OH removed the bedroom ones and boarded them up as space was tight. The one in the living he opened it up after getting advice from my builder brother. He then proceeded to clean up the bricks. We then added a Sandstone hearth and a wooden surround we bought from B & Q. If you want original Victorian then worth looking on eBay or Gumtree. I’m sorry I’ve no idea of costs if you have to employ someone to do this. Our surround was £99 many years ago and the sandstone paving is not expensive.

Just think in 50 years time that surround will be a wonderful period feature!! I ripped our equivalent out took a whole day to do it. It was built onto a heap of building rubble which I dug out. I had to add extra pieces of joist and about 10 lengths of floor board to fill the gap. The boards needed lengths of hardboard packing pieces or similar as the new ones are slightly thinner than the original imperial measurements ones. We put a gas fire and commercial fireplace in now 30 years old and this is starting to look dated itself now!!

I'm still tempted by stove option but weighing cost -v- usage not sure there would be better things to spend limited funds on. I'm loathe to take photo as have just emptied kids PGL cases over the floor! We have one sofa that will probably stay - days forum dark brown 3 seater. Other than that I'm going to build in full length shelves on one side of chimney breast and bench shelf on other side for TV. It's pretty much blank canvas
