Need help decorating grey and green family room

Hi - we're in the process of building an open plan rear extension.

I don't have a plan I can upload so will try to explain. It will have four 'quarters' clockwise:

(1) dining table;

(2) family sitting area with wood stove and alcoves;

(3) family homework/games area (four children);

(4) kitchen with large island breakfast bar.

Its open plan with (1) and (2) beside folding doors onto the SW facing garden.

Given the proximity to the garden, and that grey links the other rooms in the house, I'm keen on a grey / green decor for family living. I like calm styling; but the kids don't like boring. Kitchen units are off-White, except for the island which are dark grey.

Please send ideas to help us. Here's one pic i found.

Why not try a moveable bookcase on wheels in white, to help screen the Childrens play area? This can then, depending on their ages be decorated as a kind of separate area with colourful storage boxes, playmats etc in White / Green and another funky colour for fun.

You could even put two back to back, one side kids, one side adults!

Thank you Man. That's a great idea. I hadn't thought of putting two back-to-back. That would give us lots of extra storage, and two different styles.... Love that idea.

The two L-shaped sofas were a mistake. Even one of those is just an awkward thing to sit on for two people. I'm all for trying to work with the things you have, but this will always be difficult to configure. Can you post one or more photos taken from the other side of the room? So we can see the current dining area? I wonder if you can move the bookcase to the short wall, the dining table to that end of the room, one sofa to where the bookcase now is and sell the other one so you can get two chairs that you can place in front of the sliding window, at an angle, facing the sofa. But it depends on what this side of the room looks like. In all honesty, I'd rehome both sofas and get a 'normal' one. Sorry.

Hi all! I though I thought I would show you the progress on our living room. South Africa went into Covid lock-down just as I planned to start working on the room, so I had to wait a bit until some of the industries started up again. We re-covered the two bucket chairs in a dark gray colour. It came out a little bit lighter than I wanted, but it still looks good to me. I also bought a jute rug to replace the red one, I really think it makes the coffee table stand out better. I also put up some of my framed paintings and vacation pictures. This is pretty much how things will stay for a while. Future plans include: It's my husband's job to tidy up/hide all the wiring and remove some of the tech stuff in the corner, he promised it will look much better once he's done. I am hinting at buying/inheriting a vintage hospital standing lamp from my dad to place next to the leather couch, maybe I'll paint it black to match the picture frames. Some time in the future I will find some side tables and a table lamp to go next to the chairs and the wood framed couch. Another painting will also go above the couch where the newspaper placeholder is currently. Since these pictures were taken I have swapped the positions of the chairs and the wood framed couch, and to me both configurations look good, I have no preference. Any comments or suggestions are welcome!

What about these lights to zone (i) sitting ‘quarter’, (ii) dining ‘quarter’, (iii) kids ‘quarter’. i.e. in grey, sage green, and white clay. And these over the kitchen island/ breakfast bar. Or perhaps these over the island? Maybe in different colours?

What do you think?
