Living room, nearly there! Stuck on rug and/or coffee table.
What shall I do with this big empty floor? It's calling for a rug (I think) but what colour? The walls are a warm grey (Chic Shadow) and the carpet a warm sandy/biscuit colour. The accent colour is a mustardy yellow and I'm thinking that there's more than enough of this (perhaps too much?)
I've read all the advice here that says the rug should be under the front legs of the sofa's. If I do this , it will finish about two feet away from the front of the fireplace. I'm wondering if I should bring it right up to the hearth. This would mean that it would extend beyond the end of the sofa in front of the window. Any thoughts?
Lastly, should I plonk a coffee table (perhaps glass) on top of the rug?
Still got some art and ornaments to get.

Comments (30)Lol! It is hard to make a decison. I would just check the return policy of every company especially the postage. If you're unsure it may be better using a high street shop so you can just return in person. I'm a bit 50/50 on the rug size. I would typically go for front feet on but if you look back at your photos (and stick your fingers over the missing half of the rug when it's widthways!) it only seems to make a small difference in this instance but that could be the camera angle. Traditionally rugs should either go right under furniture or just under the front legs. I think it's nice to be able to see your flooring though so as long as it's not miles away from the furniture I think it'll look good. I'm not usually a fan of glass topped coffee tables. Not least because they show up dust and marks and make that horrible noise when you put mugs down on them (is it just me that bothers?). 7 years agoHi again. Coffee table arrived an hour ago (might be a little small but it will do the job!). I've taken the round rug from my daughter's bedroom just to test out the shape. What do you think? Originally I'd thought of going for a rectangular rug but I think the round one might work (although obviously not this colour).

7 years agoI wouldn't pay any attention to the 'rules' when it comes to rugs i.e. they need to fit under the furniture bla, bla, bla. Abigail Ahern is a celebrated, high profile Interior Designer who completely trashes the entire rule book when it comes to Interior Design and she is AMAZING! Here's a link to her advice when it comes to rugs.
The only thing I wouldn't do, is push a rug right up against a hearth. I absolutely hate that! It's a pet peeve of mine! I also think you should go with a rectangular rug. To me, it looks better on the eye.
I think Heal's have some lush rugs and highly recommend that you take a look!
You have a grey/blue colour on the walls, a biscuit colour on the floor and yellow accents - if I was you, I'd go for a grey rug, possibly a weave with subtle grey stripes/shapes.
I think a dark wooden vintage coffee table would look lovely in this room, on top of the rug. This would help to inject a little character and visually lift it.
