POLL: Thatched Roofs, too much hassle than it's worth?

Thatched roofs are a staple feature in any English countryside village. The beautiful texture and character they give to any building is unmatched. However with the expensive upkeep are they really worth it or should we never let them become a feature of the past?
YES: They should stay forever
NO: They are outdated and expensive
OTHER: I love them but I wouldn't have it myself

POLL: Real or fake Christmas tree?
Comments (50)We've gone for one of each again this year. I'd echo the sentiments of the smell of the real tree being almost magical. The real tree is in the sitting room - and this is basically the wife's. She has full control over this bad-boy. She chooses the decorations, the lights, where things go, what colour scheme (for some reason the lights in this picture look blue. They're not, they're just a different 'white' - phone cameras hey). The fake tree is in the kids room (aka the conservatory) - this is decorated by the kids, and basically they just stand there and throw as much stuff as they can get their hands on in the direction of the tree and see what sticks. I did have to wait till they went to bed to 're-locate' some of the accessories, as 90% of is was only decorated up to waist level....See MorePOLL: Shower or bath?

Comments (18)When we extended our house last year with a large fireplace we wanted a multi fuel burning stove. However the regulations regarding flue and chimney meant the neighbours would have been subjected (and may have objected) to this eyesore, even if at the back of the house. We settled for a Gas version. The stove itself (Huntington) looks exactly the same as the multi fuel version. However, we are really delighted with it. The flame looks really genuine and as others have stated there is no cleaning out and we have instant heat and sometimes so much output that we no longer have to turn on the central heating in the lower rooms! Comments (27)Ah, I didn't realise the stairs comes up in line with the bathroom wall so yeah, you can't move the bathroom wall out really as there won't be enough head space walking down the stairs. I think your only option is to either live with the small bathroom - or extend out over your GF extension (if that is even possible - depends on your extended roof and also the footings as they might not be deep enough to take the weight of a 2 storey extension). The cost of a loft conversion is hefty and especially if you don't have decent head height in there as you will end up with a tiny room in the middle (I'm guessing??). Our loft is original (bungalow) and was always a room but it cost us £20k just to re-tile, reboard/plaster/insulate and put an en-suite in! An extra £6k if we pushed out the hip (which we didn't end up doing). Dormers are possible to gain headspace but it's the overall roof height that is the issue. Sometimes you could lower your floor level to gain head height but for the cost involved, you really would be better moving....See More
