Chimney Breast - to keep or not to keep?

Hi there. So, I'm redecorating and having a kitchen extension. My thin Edwardian house has a through lounge and dining room, each with a fireplace, but with narrow recesses (middle wall was knocked through before I moved in). The lounge has an original fire surround, the dining room with opening only. I'm thinking of having the chimney in the dining room removed (as well as the chimney in the small bedroom above it), but my question is, should I keep both chimneys to make it look even or does it not matter? Access to both rooms is via one door from the hallway into the dining room. Thanks very much.

so with the bed against the chimney breast you think its better to wallpaper the whole way round? i tried the picture on the wallpaper and it just gets lost and doesnt pop at all. i think the plain chimney breast gives a nice backdrop for pictures and makes the room look wider and brighter. with it plain it also gives option to paint chimney breast down the line. really appreciate your advice. i guess im now thinking i'll leave it plain with another layer of lining paper for now and worst case scenario if i dont like it in a month or two i can order more paper and paper over it. maybe its just one of those thibgs that takes time to get used to it. thanks

Hi there, we deal with this issue on a daily basis, generally we will always try to remove the chimney either to roof space or entirely (including roof stack on main roof). These options do of course involve the party wall and advice and guidance is needed. We do provide our own free PDF advice here. Failing to remove the chimney, you can as you mentioned, have shelving units etc. along that same wall to hide the chimney. Alternatively, you could use the money saved from the removal to purchase a heating system which could be fitted within the existing chimney flue (just a thought!). One piece of advice (hope this isn't out of turn!), your extension beyond the rear of 1500mm internally is a very minimal gain for the expense of the steel work involved in removing the rear wall of your property. We would generally advise against such extensions as you are not gaining enough floor space for the cost of works involved. The only way to save on some of the fabrication/steel costs would be to have a support post where your two large steel beams will meet, this then may impact the open feel you are trying to achieve! I'm no builder but have done similar refurb in the past. If looks like the cheeks (the part under the lintel that holds it up at the sides) is virtually non-existent and may have to be brought in to hold the weight along with the steel. It would look amazing once done. This image is from a little rental cottage I used to have and the whole fireplace was filled with bricks, breeze blocks and all manner of stuff!

Wayfair have fabulous customer service. For example, I bought a garden parasol which wouldn’t open properly as stitching was incorrect. I took photos and contacted them and within hours they apologised and arranged a reimbursement. They asked me to keep or dispose of the parasol. I gave it to my stepson and his wife sorted the stitching and it works perfectly now! I then ordered a different parasol from them and it is lovely. To me, a good company is about after sales customer care, and they have it in bucket loads. I also bought this lovely oak side table for 60 quid! It’s beautifully made and really heavy.
