Stair renovation

We are renovating an old farmhouse on a budget that won't allow us to replace the existing staircase yet.We desperately need some ideas, walls will be white...

I would keep this narrow space simple. Paint the stairs white or pale grey and add a stair runner. There are currently many fabulous designs currently on the market from which to choose.

I honestly can't tell from the picture ( and did try blowing it up ) what the staircase is made from. Is it Tile or block board with a metal trim? - I think it's something with a metal trim.

Anyway, It will need amending as you can't paint tiles or block board and make them look nice and the metal trim has to go.

Pretty much the only option is a full width carpet.

Remove one of the hand rails, you don't need two.

I presume you're putting plaster board up as painted brickwork indoors is not really ideal and it's not insulated, so if one of your walls is an outside wall, which is quite normal on a staircase, you'll need insulating board to keep the warmth in.

Hi Jo. It looks a lovely hall. I would go for a warm white, to lighten the hall. Have a look at the various options from little Greene or farrow and ball. Perhaps consider a taupe'ish shade for the shirting boards and architraves to tie in with the paper? I assume you're leaving the stairs and door as wood? Perhaps go for for a console table over the radiator or a nice thick Wooden shelf with mirror and where you have a mirror currently add a little chair? Maybe one of the short velvet buttoned ones as there looks to be room? What are you doing with the floor?

I love my dado rails. I have picture rails in all rooms but dado rails in the hallways as I find it really breaks up the room and my toddler uses them to wipe his sticky fingers on, rather than the walls. I think your rail may be a little high though, like ours were and we also had 'dado rail art' at the top of the stairs. Took plastering to fix. It's really nice having pictures up the stairs which I haven't got around to as I don't have picture rails and drills make me worry our ancient plaster will crumble...so wonder if picture rails could have helped with that. Just a couple of thoughts!

Normally I like a painted, period staircase, but you effectively already have a suspended staircase. Paint and live with it until you can do a glass banister properly. Treads and risers can be painted and a runner fitted. Here is the staircase in our last house (1938 semi), before and after painting. I actually changed the spindles to something more ornate! We never finished decorating so forgive he fact that the walls were bare. We unexpectedly sold the house this summer to do yet another renovation, which we are just finishing...

Quick update: The three bedrooms and landing were spray painted. Not entirely convinced it saved labour and have to factor in purchase of spray painter and used double the amount of emulsion. Plus felt guilty not using my regular decorator :( We have now started work downstairs. At the rear of the house (see plan posted previously) was a bedroom and dining room. Decided to take out the wall between the two to make the two rooms into open plan kitchen/ diner. Unfortunately the ceiling came down when the wall was taken out so additional work required to rebuild and plaster. When renovating always expect the unexpected! Although it cost several extra days in labour to make good, there was a saving in electricians time as he didn't have to scrabble around in the roof void to fit the new wiring! Ceiling and all walls in new room have been plastered and kitchen units fitted. Really pleased with the Dove Grey Shaker units with copper handles from Howdens. Had the cupboard handles fitted horizontally so they can line up with the handle on the integrated dishwasher (still to be installed) as well as the drawer handles. Dithered about a gas hob as I think people prefer (?) but went for an induction hob in the end as sits level with the worktop also thought safer as hob had to be sited into the breakfast bar. A lovely wooden beam (over hob) had been boxed in so we have pulled off the old plaster- it will be sanded down eventually. Next job; stripping out the old kitchen at the front of the house......
