Fixing an old flagstone path

I just took several inches of soil and grass off of an old flagstone walkway that was barely visible. Now, I'd like to take out the soil from the joints and put something that won't create a muddy mess, but I don't want to plant between. I was thinking along the lines of traffic bond gravel, pea gravel or polymeric sand. The joints are quite large, up to 2 inches at some points. Any advice or other options would be appreciated, thank you

The joints might be a bit large for polymeric sand, though it would be the easiest thing to do in the circumstance you describe. Most manufacturers (Alliance, Techni-Seal, etc) will tell you the maximum joint width on the packaging.

Not a big fan of pea gravel in these situations as it is not particularly stable based on its rounded shape.

If gravel, then I might suggest decomposed granite as it packs down nicely and allows for drainage as well.

Not sure what you are referencing with "traffic bond gravel".

Pea Gravel or delaware river rock sized 1", on top of an inch of stone dust to help stay in place. The larger the stones, the less likely they will kick out. Dogs can do the most to take out these types of stones, but the stone dust will help the stones to set, and will help to deter, but not stop completely, weeds from getting through.

Glad you persevered and had it fixed. You paid a lot of money to specifically have a decorative path. It being out of line on LHS with the front door would have been a permanent niggle that prevented you from enjoying it. Now you have a beautiful symmetrical path leading up to your front door. Congratulations!

Hello howden9. That is quite a garden. I can answer a couple of your points straight off but you really need a visit (or better pictures and a ground plan) to get fuller ideas. The shaded area at the back is ideal for a composting area and the shed really does not need the sunshine. I'm assuming most light comes from the left side of your pictures, i.e. the south side. But as the cedar and poplars cast shadow across the whole width, if I understand you correctly, you could put either in any part of that area. As it is larger than needed for both, perhaps you might like to consider what else you would like to do, or have, in that area before deciding finally. Next, you need a skip. The conifers in the arch will not grow back well once trimmed into a nice shape. You may as well get rid now instead of waiting for them to prove just how ugly they can be. A rockery is not "low maintenance", a commonly held but sadly delusional belief. So they do tend to get neglected and very soon deteriorate into uncared for disrepair and eyesore. Another reason for a skip unless you can recycle all that stone. Possibly a wall or two? A raised bed or two? A pond or water feature? Stone features are beautiful. If you are anywhere within reach of North Wales, talk to Houzzer Pro Jez Young, the best stone feature builder I have ever come across. Or if you happen to be in or around West Yorkshire we would love to hear from you. If you can get it flat enough and without it being slippery, stone could even make a good patio style seating area for your "place in the sun". Your lengthiest period of sunshine, if I have grasped the garden orientation correctly, is within the right of the photos. Your seating area should go somewhere between where you stood to take the pix and to the right of where the conifer archway is now. Nearer to where you took them may help avoid the summer evening shadow from the cedar. Fruit trees are low maintenance so it is probably worth geting the health of those trees checked if you and/or your family like fruit. So don't decide anything for that space before deciding whether or not they are worth keeping. That should get you started in line with the information you have given. Are you looking to do it (or get it done) all at once or taking it a step at a time? Please keep us posted.

Tanks all so much for these amazing ideas!! I think once I have implemented these the overall look will work - I just need to picture the final result as I do each bit separately. @south Wales - I had considered grass but the front of the house is covered by a huge oak tree canopy in the summer, the tree would probably dry everything out. It blocks most of the direct sunlight out completely. Do you think grass is still achievable? @suesykes - yours looks amazing, is that a rhododendron I can spot? @michaeldbutler - I used an iPad app called color effects @sorayasohal - thanks for your great ideas, I am very keen to use a couple of potted plants in front of the pillars. I just need to make sure they don't get stolen! @arthur road - many thanks for this excellent list, I hadn't really considered using a variety of different plants as the bed is small, but it's a great idea! @ensign - I wanted to use a taller tree each side of the pillars but the drive is on a slope and it might look a bit lopsided. I wonder if there is a way I could correct this by digging out and leveling under each pot or would this look weird? @amanda hunter - it's a great tip looking at local house styles! Mine is quite modern (1996) and is situation in a lovely village with quite a lot of older style houses with authentic wood doors etc. sadly this is a composite door and I added this as the wood door which was on the house was in a terrible state, so my options are limited to having it sprayed a suitable color. So far I think I will: 1) add flagstone path 2) lower globe buxus type pots in front of each pillar 3) paint door (still wanted red) 4) use some of the plants recommended here and go to my local garden centre. The porch also has built in flower beds flanking the steps so once flowers are in there it will look good. The darkness of the north facing house sheltered by a large oak tree is an issue for me, the house looks great but looks dark and gloomy, hence I don't want to have a door that looks too dark and dull, unless it was black. The company who will be spraying the door can do all farrow and ball colors, so I am going to check out some more heritage colors as per Laura and other suggestions. I'm going to get some blue and red samples this week!!

The recessed downlighting makes the area look stark and like a clinic's waiting room. Overhead downlighting on its own is a bad choice for living spaces. For now, I would move the small cabinet to the far right (near the door entering from that side) and place a table lamp on it, move the large sofa against the grey wall and add a floor lamp to the left of it, similar or complimentary style to the table lamp. Better yet, remove the small cabinet completely and get two matching low bookcases to flank the sofa, preferably with doors to hide the clutter, and place table lamps on them. Move the books and items on the tall bookcase on the right to those cabinets and get rid of the bookcase. The grey wall needs some artwork, or shelving with decorative items, as in some of the examples others have posted. Then a simple but plush geometric patterned area rug, about 200 cm x 300 cm in front of the sofa to define the lounge space and set it off from the dining/kitchen area. Keep it medium toned, perhaps a cream background with a little of the same grey as the wall plus some color like a leaf green or teal blue, even pumpkin orange (all go well with that dark warm grey). Place the smaller sofa where the large one is now and get a simple low coffee table to place in the center of the area rug. Move the chair to the right of the door on the right, angled toward the lounge area, if it will fit without crowding the dining (presuming you have eliminated the awkward bookcase.) Place a floor lamp behind it. Buy or make some accessory pillows for the sofas that pick up the accent color in the area rug. For the table and floor lamps, pick simple styles that can be outfitted with multilevel light bulbs or dimmers. Once everything is arranged, turn off those downlights and turn on the table and floor lamps and the room will feel much more inviting and warm.
