I'm working on a project with a slight Moroccan feel, but we have pretty heavy winters. Zone 5. Thank you!

Hi April, it is a garden in St Albans, Hertfordshire - so yes, it will occasionally freeze during the winter and we have taken that into account when sourcing materials for the design and construction. Hope this helps?

Stephen Edwards makes a really good point about the thermostat, and it works both ways (ie causing the heating to come on when you don't need it, as well as going off when you do!). Thermostats are often placed in the hallway, which can be colder than the rest of the house by cold air coming in through a draughty front door. It sounds like you have systemic problems to solve, but once those are sorted out you could look at draughtproofing, paying particular attention to anywhere that affects the thermostat. If you identify your letterbox as draughty you could look at fitting one of our letterbox solutions (we do a lovely stainless steel front letterplate as well as an inner letter box draught excluder), and if you have a pet that's going in and out through a draughty, rattly old catflap we do a pet door too. I'd steer clear of painting the walls, and in any case not without discussing first with your neighbour (assume that is the neighbour's property?). If the neighbour did allow, it would be very easy to span a pergola-style structure between both buildings, and from this you could have a retractable sunshade (see below link). This could provide a much more intimate space for evening dining/relaxing, especially in early & late summer when its a bit cooler. All of the projects are very impressive, the transformations are all pretty amazing and should definitely provide inspiration to anyone looking to do similar projects. I was personally torn between the country kitchen and the sloping garden, in the end my vote went to the sloping garden project, the transformation from a blank awkward looking area to such a cleverly designed and attractive space is amazing.
