I really like your idea of having an armchair. You could make quite a feature of it by putting it on a nice woven rug with a small side table. You could then have a wall mounted unit which would have a front to hide some of the items. This would then leave space on the current unit for your record player.

If it's for every day use them I think your probably best going and searching for a chair so you can try them out. I have a wingback chair that's really comfy and with cushions on it it looks great in my room, which is contemporary. I do have swivel chairs in another room, look great and comfy, but not for a long sitting. I think you need something with a high back so you can relax into the chair rather than it finishing half way down your back
