A kitchen that drives me crazy

Can you tell that this kitchen is in need of some work?! It lacks a focal point (oh that fridge) and has a rather 'cobbled together' feel. In fact it was, from old school science benches and an ex-display set of units that just happened to fit...almost. (Behind the camera lens is a dining area). Any advice on alterations or alterations that won't cost the earth appreciated.

I love the work top, like this sort of real world dilemma too. The fridge is an ungainly focal point. Could you swap it with the cupboard next to the cooker? The wall units are too high, and the different sizes are distracting. I think I would paint the floor units, white would blend in the white goods, but black or grey would make it seem intentionally unfitted. The baskets on top of the cupboards add to the distraction.

It isn't terrible though, it is light and airy with good workspace, and it looks clean and practical, sometimes we only see the problems in our homes, I think you have made a good working kitchen without spending much money, and should be congratulated for that.

Looking at resolving the problems with minimal costs and limited scope for rearranging; I would look at ways of closing off the gaps to the sides of the fridge as that creates a clutter zone and draws your eye to where you dont want to go.

Another thought is to add splash backs all round; the off-green colour dosent blend with the colour of the timber. I would create a visual focal point over the fridge to draw your eye up.

Being picky, change the light fitting plus use LED lamps rather than the compact fluorescent tubes (they are ugly - designers nightmare)

I moved the doorway to my bathroom and it was worth every penny if it means you can get a better arrangement, but exploring all the options first is best to avoid the hassle. Personally i would put the TV in the corner labelled 'wasted space', put the sofa where the bookcase is, put the armchairs in much the same place but perhaps more in a straight line with the fireplace and the coffee table in the middle. It looks like all your furniture hugs the walls, but it will make the room seem a lot less long and narrow if the flow was broken up a bit in the middle. Then I would move the book case over where the TV is, add a snuggler in the bay window and perhaps a sideboard (or guitars) to the right on the wall across from where the TV currently is. It would almost be like splitting the room in to two different spaces for two different purposes. The guitars and books near the window for light and relaxation and the furniture in a social setting without being center around the tv entirely but in a good view as well. My room is equally as awkward and I am still trying to figure it out so best of luck to you!

Hey! I've just seen the last comments. I live in Spain and there doesn't seem to be as much choice over here as there is in the USA after browsing at lot.. the Gubi light does look similar to one of the Tom Dixon beats shapes and I like the oriental vibe they give.. I am leaning toward that style for the pendants and will probably end up going with one. As for the splashback.. it's a nightmare.. I really have no idea.. I think dark like black and I think it will look to much and take away from the accents.. I think of grey and I think it's too boring and monocromatic.. I think of colour and I get scared lol.. really don't know and to be honest... I do regret going all white in the kitchen and not going with something darker or mid tone on the lowers at the back to ground it a bit more. I see so many kitchens on Instagram and Pinterest and I am always drawn to the darker ones.. but as I have a darker floor, I thought it would be too much. Anyway, it's done now and I guess we all have things we would do differently. I could always relacquer the lower doors quite cheaply if it came to it I guess. I really love Hague Blue by farrow and ball and have always wanted to use it but I think it wouldn't fit in anywhere and I'm not brave enough anyway🙈 Some good news is that I have finally managed to get the stonemason to change the island worktop which he destroyed after cleaning it with paint thinner.. after 4 months of fighting and the carpenter also finished up all the last details this week.. after 5 months. Stonemason has offered to give me a big discount on the splashback if I put a slab on the wall but really have no idea.. options are Dekton, Silestone, Neolith and Compac colours. By the way.. just saw this flat on pinterest and it reminded me of mine a bit but well done and with a more interesting kitchen.. trying to get some inspiration from it: https://hot-walls.ru/portfolio/сердце-столицы-99/ My favourite designs seem to all be Russian for some reason.. 😅

I don’t think it’s a crazy idea, very smart if you can find a close match. Even if the carcasses are slightly different, you (or a carpenter) can make up some doors to match your current ones. I like your latest layout. Personally, I’d move the stove to the right of the sink (where the toaster is, put the ovens in the island with some drawer for pots, pans, baking stuff. That way you can reduce the cabinetry around the fridge, and centre it on the wall with 2 narrow tall cupboards (40cm) either side. Great for a pull-out pantry. I think this will zone the areas a bit better. Cooker and ovens close together, pantry and fridge close together etc.

Personally me was looking for good clean colors for indoors , did try many brands and CROWN was the best , I did used white CROWN CLEAN EXTREME scrubbable matt 5ltr, but there is possibility for you get tone what you like they do mixing. Hi. I'd paint the base units in a colour to complement the worktop more with perhaps the wall units in the wall colour. I'd remove the china cabinet and replace with shelves to create more of a focal point. Ideally I'd get an integrated fridge and have a door made however if this is out of budget I'd block in the gaps and paint the fridge in the unit colour which you should (?!) be able to do using zinsser as a primer. I agree with Sandra, great job, love the worktop
