What was the first thing you bought for your home?

Once you start it's never easy to stop, but if you think back to when you first moved in, what was the first item you bought for your home? Whether a necessity or something you'd had your eye on, we'd love to hear!

Mine was my nordic rug - and still very happy with my purchase I have to say!

A cat! I already had a bed and the previous owner had left all of the kitchen appliances and a washing machine but a house without a pet just isn't a home so I was straight down the rescue centre to get this wee madam, shortly after I bought a sofa so me and the cat would have somewhere to cuddle up together!

A beautiful white wardrobe for my daughters room. Way off budget with all our moving costs but it was in the sale...

What concerns me about buying furniture on-line is that I can't try it out to see if it is comfortable and if it fits me , which for me is a crucial quality in furniture (I'm taller, shorter chairs aren't a good fit). I also don't like not being able to assess the quality. I'm not a big fan of on-line furniture retailers for that reason and probably would not use one. So research the market, and especially the price point at which people will buy on-line. I suspect younger people are more apt to buy furniture that is reasonably priced on-line. Include all measurements (including seat height on chairs) and have a review/comment section so people can see how the folks who have bought furniture like both quality and the delivery service.

When I came to this country as a student, the first thing I HAD to buy was cutlery - trying to spread butter on toast with your fingers (or a pen, as I ended up doing) is rather yucky. The second time around, it was a hoover. I had a generous relocation package when I came here again for a job (and a set of cutlery in my luggage), managed to rent a really nice flat rather quickly - it looked clean when I viewed it. However, when I actually moved in few days later, I just couldn't believe the amount of dust everywhere; I knew I wouldn't be able to sleep unless I went around at least once with a vacuum cleaner and some wipes. So, about 5 minutes to closing time, I was in Curry's pestering a shop assistant about the best hoover they had and then, probably to my new neighbours total annoyance, running the thing for about half an hour... not my best move making new friends, but at least I didn't fear dying of asphyxiation over night. And just to bore you some more: first thing for the first house I bought in this country (great house, bad neighbourhood) was an Ikea mattress (first photo); I slept on the floor for quite a few months until I bought a bed frame - only bothered because I'd just met this great guy (my now husband) and reasoned we couldn't break the bed unless there was a bed to break :))). And for this house that we bought together (ignoring all the necessities) it was the red cow!!! bought in Paris and brought back in a hat-box, to the French custom officers dismay :p (dear me, my life story in house objects.... never thought of that... thanks, Emmeline! :))

The orange painting stood out clearly. I saw it even before the green wall that took a much larger space and thinking of the colour wheel orange comes before green .Not surprising !!!!

Just goes to show, we all see different things in different ways, would love to see the results of the survey by gender and age as am sure it is all related. Depends on what you are looking for at that moment in life I guess. Fun post and survey, great to see such different answers, shows how complex design is and there are few absolutes.

I think it was a new boiler! the previous one was cast iron & practically an antique. Amazingly still working fine but horribly inefficient (previous owners had wrapped it in tin foil to insulate)

For my first house, an old chesterfield sofa (I already had a bed and the prevous owners left me the cooker) for this one a huge kitchen dresser (before it even had a kitchen).

This is my first home I was given a sofa and armchair by a family friend, I had my bed from my parents home, my parents bought me a cooker and my sister gave me her old fridge so my first purchase was a dishwasher even before a washing machine (I used the local launderette for a while.

Washing up is my pet hate lol.

For us, with both the houses we have renovated it has been beautiful antique light fittings and lamps. They were not fitted for several years whilst planning and construction proceeded, however, buying them first set the tone for both houses, whilst not committing us to a design style before the spaces were fully developed. Also, at the start of a project it is inspiring to buy a few really extravagant items, but if lights are left to the end of the project you feel more time and budget pressured and inclined to compromise and buy unexceptional mid-price ones; you may later wish you had spent more time and money choosing really special ones.

New door and window handles to replace the old fashioned brass ones. Even I was surprised at just how big an improvement it felt.

A canvas print - bought in the US of the Carina Nebula . Though it is of a galaxy where stars are born it also looks like a beautiful piece of modern art. Fabulous colours. Destined for my new double height entrance hall which I had to fight for with my husband when we designed the home. Space really is the final frontier.

Two large yellow canvas garden chairs, a bit like very big camping chairs, as we needed somewhere to sit and a smoke coloured glass top dining table with dining chairs to match. All from Habitat, which was the 'go to' place in the 70s. We thought ourselves very modern!

Second hand cooker! We were poor as church mice when we bought our house, and a friend of my mum's was selling hers. It turned out to be rubbish and the oven didn't work properly. Mum was fuming and gave her a right telling off! We then decided to buy a new one on finance. Ah the good old days.........

I was leaving the marital home for a basement flat and I was feeling a little vulnerable and hard done by. Just me and my little cat so we needed a lovely new bed, just for us. I bought a large wooded sleigh bed from a local family store. They were lovely and came round that afternoon with the bed in pieces. They put it all together and gave me a free new duvet set. My new start.

Solid brass Georgian door knobs for all the internal doors. They cost me a ridiculous amount of money but I bought them before we even had our foundations poured. So glad I did coz we would never have had the money for them at the end and I absolutely love them!!
