Kitchen worktop and wall suggestions?

Hi, we are are currently having an extension built and looking for advice and ideas around the kitchen finish - in particular the worktops and walls please.

We like the idea of a white / light quartz worktop. We particularly like Silestone Lagoon, or possibly Blanco Zeus (plain white) but the quotes more than I really wanted to spend. Are you aware of any similar quartz alternatives that are significantly cheaper, and is the quality much different?
Solid wood also looks nice and much cheaper, but not sure how easily we will mark it if it is varnished - I am quite good at leaving pools of water around the sink much to my wife's irritation...
Less keen on the feel of Corian vs quartz, and the wife is not too keen on the idea of laminate

For the walls we were thinking of large grey tiles, or possibly a light glass splash back.

Some further info on the general look we are after:

We want something that looks reasonably contemporary, but not clinical nor something that risks going out of date in a few years.
The house is a 1960 semi, and we are adding a new open plan kitchen / dining / family room out the back, so no vintage styles that risk looking out of place.
We have a 2 year old child so something practical is essential, and don't want
Kitchen will probably be a painted shaker style finish with a modern look, probably light grey / partridge grey with bar handles, black induction cooker hob, and Karndean Classic Oak floor

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

The marketing companies do such a great job that anything you buy will date - even the classics 'evolve' over time - so perhaps go with styles that give you a bit of flexibility - ie that you could change colour of ( painted finish ) or that you could easily change handles on etc so you can keep up with style changes.

Re worktops - if you choose something that's within your current budget - with a view to maybe getting your 'dream worktop' in a couple of years ? This might be an option. And just try and get into the habit of drying puddles near places where the worktop had been altered/cut/drilled/joined etc - as if you did choose Laminate due to budget - this could damage it quicker than you would hope !

There are various brands of quartz available that offer a spectrum of colours, here at Impala Stone we offer the following brands; Quartzform, Compac, Caesarstone, Cambria, Silestone, Technistone, Cimstone and others. Pure white and marble like quartz are very popular and lower end brands do have options in these so its worth checking out some websites or visiting stockists for samples to find the one right for you!

I have black granite work tops and a huge amount of them and an island - my reason for choosing is that I believe granite is a lot stronger in the dark colours where as marble is stronger in the light colours - I am (hope husband doesn't see this!) a little bit bored of the black work tops - they are classic but a bit dead - next time, if there is ever a next time, I would not play so safe and would go for light work tops with a bit more interest. I would steer clear of work tops unless you are prepared to really look after them and treat them regularly! As for walls - I would go light - and ensure it is a paint that you can wash splattering off! Not a basic emulsion! That way, by going light you can change colour of kitchen accessories at any time to freshen it up and update it. If I was planning a new kitchen now, I would probably go for light tops with up stands and then have a feature surface in a different material - perhaps a rounded wooden block at the end of a unit as a feature. I love my kitchen but I have played it a bit safe, on reflection!!

Thanks, but there isn´t really a windo sill. All there is is the thickness of the widow surround, which is a couple of millimeters. I really would like to find something htat will just go along the join where the walls meet the worktop. I´m sure there must be some kind of trim that is commonly used.

Hi Pete,

Have you considered concrete for your proposed work surfaces. A contemporary material that works well with other natural or fabricated finishes/materials. Concrete can be pigmented to chosen colour or simply used without pigmented for a standard grey cementitious finish. Surfaces can also be semi-ground back to expose stone aggregate if a more rustic aesthetic is required. Have attached some images for inspiration.
