I don't think colour is the issue, it's tone that is lacking. Convert the image to black and white and it will look a bit insipid. The bank of cupboards where the fridge is would have benefited form being a dark colour, the pendants are nice but need to be much lower and the wall cupboards look a little high with gaps. I actually think the rug works well and would add more things with character. The splash back would have been more dramatic if perhaps teal tiles were used instead of glass.

Thanks for all advice so far! I totally agree that lighting will be key, I have plenty of light from the downlights but there is room on the ceiling for me to add pendant lights and/or chandelier above dining table for decor. If I was to go for both, what do you think of this style of crystal chandelier? If I went for that, what style of pendant lights would be best for the breakfast bar - I'm thinking it would need to be something fairly simple. Would these tear drop ones work? Or would smoked glass be better? I also had a thought about the stools, they were mega cheap so I'm not precious about them but they are the perfect size to fit right under the breakfast bar and not impose on the space in anyway at all. I thought I could paint the legs dark and reupholster the top in a dark blue velvet? Thanks again!

The brass from the lights, copper taps and stainless steel sink maybe too much, and especially so if your switches/sockets are a different finish like polished chrome ... The copper tap could work with a SS sink if you can add copper accents elsewhere and limit the finishes to the two.

Many thanks to all who have replied. Lots of good ideas. I am currently thinking along the lines of double downlights in the ceiling and wall lights over the worktop. I had considered a lower ceiling over the worktop as Danielle has done but with no wall at one end I thought it was going to look incomplete. It will be a couple of months before it needs to be installed.
