Wood Burning Stoves
Comments (19)Hi there.. Yes they are bought by the size of the area you need to heat... We lived in the Shetland isles.for 5 years, and was an old craft house. And mostly to heat the hole house.. When it was hot,, it was hit and such a warm and welcoming feature on our most chilly and windy days... But the things is it can also be hard work.. Maybe not as much if you are in a warmer area. We could freely get pallets which helped immensely... And we tried to remove as many nails as we could see.. Otherwise these got caught in the grate at the bottom... But I would still say hard work . We got coal about £10 a bag, peat was the best for heat, but that started to get a little dearer to. All in all we paid about £2500 with the fire and fitting. About 3 years ago now. Didn't regret it at all. But would think twice about having one now.. I ain't getting any younger.....See MoreContemporary channelling of 50/60s- needs warmth!
Comments (11)And where the tree of life was, we have the beginnings of a gallery wall, though I don't have a pic yet. We're looking at getting a white wood-burning stove where the fireplace is, getting rid of the fireplace completely, just having a brick-lined opening for the stove to fit in. Any thoughts?...See MoreBungalow layout ideas please
Comments (10)Having had time to 'play' on the floor planner, I came to realise that gaining the two things that you would like the most, storage and an extra loo, were not that easy. If you go with my original idea of moving the entrance it does make for a much larger master bedroom ( gaining storage ) Going in to the Workshop from the house leads to more storage and the possibility of a guest room, which you also wanted. I think the only way to gain a lot of space and storage is to build the porch and it makes sense that if you were going to do that, you'd make it large enough for plenty of storage for the coats / shoes etc. At the same time ( as it would be cheaper and easier ) you would also build a utility room on the same patch as the porch at the rear of the kitchen. Instantly gaining huge amounts of storage. I know that you didn't want to extend, however, the plan allows for a re-jig without the porch or utility and for these to be added if you re-consider. I don't think the layout lends itself readily to a staircase in to the loft. You could put a staircase at the bottom end of the lounge, however, i honestly think the money would be better spent on a porch and utility. Bedroom areal blown up Kitchen / porch / utility blown up A concept planner is a must with this type of project. They take on board what you want, have a good old re-jig as above and come up with various ideas. They can then blow them up in 3d and give you a 'virtual ' walk about, so that you can visualise more easily what it will look like. I've done everything 'roughly' to scale and used full sized objects for the rooms, so you get a rough idea! You do need to start with a budget as Jonathan says, otherwise you can have all the grand plans in the world, but if the money isn't there, you need to taper the ideas....See MoreHallway ideas please!
Comments (12)Hi Angela. It all looks a bit dark and gloomy at the moment but you have got some nice features, slate floor, bannisters to work with. I’m sure your husband would be most pissed off if you asked him to remove the dado he has just put up, there is nothing wrong with dado rails, they are traditional. So painting the woodwork white. I would start with skirting, door architraves, front door and dado as it is visually splitting the room in two. Choose different colours for below and above dado, darker below and lighter above, someone suggested choosing colours from the slate which seems an excellent idea. Definitely replace carpet on stairs to neutral sisal or similar. If budget allows replace the hall door for something simpler and less busy (like kitchen door maybe). You may get away with not painting balusters if you make the other changes you would have to judge once the walls are done and carpet samples to hand. A narrow console or radiator cover with mirror above would bounce light around too. Best of luck!!...See MoreViva Spanish
