I suspect that the ground floor had a hallway previously, I would be tempted to reinstate a smaller version hallway but not as far as the staircase with maybe another inner door and create room for coats shoes etc to be stored in this area. This will create a cosier seating area near the window. I agree with others that a sofa across the room near the stairs would create a more workable lounge with maybe a dining table behind. I would certainly keep the double doors maybe a bi-fold version to give more space and install doors to the open shelves to unify the kitchen.

Hello Ffion, Please don't replace with White UPVC they are absolutely horrible. You are very lucky they are as nice as they are. So my suggestion is to paint with a primer like zinsser or another brand that will adhere to plastic and then paint a colour like charcoal, not too black.. If you were considering to replace the windows then definitely don't go down the upvc route. They devalue properties... but the good thing is that yours are nicer than most! I don't even mind the window panes too much as I think you will make gr8 strides just by painting the brown plastic.. Of course... this applies to the front door too... as you can do the same... Think a charcoal here too would be lovely... 2 nice square slate looking planters with something lovely either side of the door would be rather nice too.. Will you keep the little "porch" ? Could be nice without it... I like the brick too and would leave that alone.. :))

A continued palette of matching colours throughout. You can have different accent colours, but the basis of every room should be the same or very similar. Choose a neutral colour throughout and then individualise every room with your chosen accent colour. Keep it simple. It's easy to change accent colours when you're bored of them, negating the need to change wall colours, carpets or curtains etc.
