help with living room design and colour

Hi, this is our first family house and we are looking to redecorate the living room. The wall between the living room and the kitchen was knocked down to create an open space- which is useful as we have small children.
The previous owners used wallpapers which are not our cup of tea and will be stripped down as the walls needs skimming.

We have moved the radiator under the breakfast bar. The room does not get much light, so would like to make it brighter.
We'll have a made to measure sofa made in the 'U' kind of shape, which is in dark grey- almost black colour. I am attaching pictures.

Any advice on how to paint the walls, curtains, lightning, the colour of laminate flooring, the TV position?

As a parent of young kids, I am keen on keeping doors in my house as it gives an option of privacy when needed.
As the colour choice, it really depends on your preferences. As the sitting room looks as it does not get a lot of light, any neutral colour will look lovely.

I can't tell how old the home is from those photographs, but from the shape of the arch, it appears that it may be from the 50s or 60s, maybe much earlier. Since this room is the first thing people see when they walk in the front door, it needs to be designed as a "WOW" feature. I can't tell if you have enough room to separate the front entry from the rest of the room, but adjacent to the door would be a good place for a coat closet. To do it correctly and to make you happy, I would need to see pictures of the exterior and get some room dimensions. The room needs to be re-proportioned. That means that the fireplace mantle needs to fit the room size. Perhaps a mantle that incorporates a space above it for a flat screen TV. Properly sized crown molding and baseboard would enhance the feel of the room and make it more formal. If there is hardwood under the carpet, sand it and stain it a medium natural color to highlight the species of wood. The fireplace mantle should be the same species and color. If there is no wood under the carpet, I would recommend hardwood for a floor, not laminate. (You get what you pay for.) Since there is a radiator on the exterior wall under the window, I would replace it with a baseboard radiation heat panel, incorporated behind the properly proportioned baseboard so that it is hidden. The windows need to be framed (PLEASE don't use "picture frame" styled molding. You could use a chair rail and wainscoting all around to formalize the room even more. You need drapes for the window array that should fit the windows. The windows look fairly new, and the muntin array (4/1) indicates that the style of the house is traditional, perhaps Craftsman/Bungalow. What I have described for the room would fit that style.

I think wood floors are great. Solid if you can. Check which way the joists go as you may have to put noggins in to lay the wood in the best direction for the room. Also look into the options for soundproofing for the benefit of any rooms below or that it might make that room a bit echoey. Or carpet perhaps a beige not too light with a bit of 'powder blue in the twist. Change the darkest cushions for a similar blue. To enhance the modernity can you get rid of the arch over the stairs or even open up the side of the staircase putting in a bannister or floor to ceiling glass panels. If you paint the walls White be sure to invest in a number of sample pots to try different whites it's amazing how different they can look on different walls and in different lights.

Hi, I love Grey as a base colour, it will go with so many others! Grey is a cool colour, so you are often better off with feature colours being warm, such as Raspberry's and Greens for a more traditional homely feel, or even Oranges and Turquoises for a modern twist. The thing about the Tartan ( and I added some to my lounge last year, is that, less is more! When you get bored with the tartan cushions, just change them for something else. If your bases are neutral, it's very easy to change to look just by buying different cushion covers! Always go for plain, but lush curtains as they're an expensive item and you don't want to change those too often, so again go neutral. Feature walls are great for adding a splash of colour, and it's easy and cheap to change when you want a different look. Here are some ideas i've pulled together for you. Are you sure you have the measurements correct. That's around 300 Feet long by 45 feet - The size of a football pitch! That being the right size, you'd need to get an architect on board, presumably there are some windows there etc, you can't make suggestions until you know the basics - that starts with plumbing and drains., these will dictate where you can put the rooms.

I'd just say one thing. Be careful with the sofa as it looks like
it's going to be quite a dominant feature. If you're going to have it
very dark material, make sure the covers are removable and washable as
they will show every mark. With small children about it's better to go
with wipeable such as leather. Also, you'll need to keep everything else
on a very light base with another accent colour thrown in.

I really like the mustard colour armchair and it will go really well
with the sofa colour. You could then have a feature wall to match the
chair. I know that you said you weren't keen on Wallpaper, but just
around the fireplace would look lovely. Something like this:-
It also has a silver fleck in it to reflect light:- Mustard / Silver wallpaper

hello and congrats for your house. Just couple of things, the TV is one of your problems in that room and the other major problem is the sofa. Be very careful on both, the TV will give you neck pain, it is way too high, the sofa occupy too much available space and they are way too dominant in the room.

Congratulations on your new home looks like it could be a very cozy space with the layout.

You mention having the Walls skimmed? If the very top of the Walls are not too bad then please consider wall paneling. Our Bespoke wall paneling would look great in there as a 3/4 high wall covering. Saves you the re plastering costs . We understand it's an expense anyway so why not pay to have beautiful Panelled Walls rather than just plain flat walls that you then need to paint and possibly add a feature to anyway. Just a thought.

It really adds character and can also be tailored with or without traditional beading. If you like more of a classic feel then our Shaker style paneling is great. Please see one of our project in these images.

Example of a customer who had similar dilemma with paying for re skim and opted for paneling to kill two birds so to say.

Great looking space you have and really hope you create the space you want.

Lovely feature fireplace l would keep to a very pale scrub able grey for the walls with table lamps, the sofa seems a little big for the space may leave it looking even darker. A rug in front of the sofa will zone the room and give a bright hit of colour, good luck x
