Lighting to use in a corner near a TV

My TV in the main living room is in a corner adjacent to a very large stone fireplace. That whole corner of the room is very dark, but I am unsure of the best way to add lighting without creating a reflection on the TV. Wall scones would not work so well as there is only wall space to one side of the fireplace (above the TV), as a large window almost comes up to the fireplace on the other side.

I have floor space on the wall which is at a right angle to the fireplace wall beside the TV, so was thinking some kind of small side table could fit there, but I'm not sure what kind of table light to choose if I go down that route, and whether it would be a distraction on the eye in front of the TV.

Ideas all welcome!

A floor lamp with a shade could be a good solution

I mean a shade that lets soft light through, or a floor lamp that is dimmable.

Hello again, Jayk. The disagreement was about the value of fireplaces. I love them; you don't! I only discovered I loved them when I got one - this is the first home in which I've had one and up till now I've thought they were a pain, assuming they should be the focus of a room without my permission. But we agree on the technology side. It is unbelievable, isn't it, that something that we use every day (most of us, anyway) such as a television should be so prescriptively ugly. You'd think they could come up with something better that suits enough of us to be a financial success for the technology company. The way southernpointofview has fitted those two televisions in is impressive but I don't have that sort of furniture. I want a discreet wall-mounted television on an arm so I can swing it out and back. Sounds simple ...

In my opinion you should not straighten that wall- unless you get a striped carpet you will probably never notice it. I think a corner sofa is too big for this room and you would be better finding two sofas- I would look to find one that was 2.1m long and another that was about 1.5m. I think you should also be able to find plenty of choice that is only 90cm deep. To get a comfortable viewing angle on the TV I would put the TV on a bracket that hinges outward meaning you can store the TV flat against the wall opposite the window, or move it into the corner to suit both sofas. This would mean that the aerial and sockets need to be on the wall opposite the window, at the height of your eyes when sat down. And I would put the wires about 60cm from the corner if you are getting a 42” TV which would probably be as big as you could possibly consider for this space.

We have wall lights either side of our TV (not by choice as they were here when we moved in) and we changed the fittings to these pictured below. The shades are preferable for me because I personally wouldn't want a light where I could see the bulb because I feel it would be uncomfortably bright for my eyes to have that right next to the TV. These particular lights have individual switches on them as well if for some reason you ever wanted just one of them on. We find this handy as we have more wall lights on the wall opposite the TV and sometimes one of them reflects on the screen so we just switch that one light off.

Hi Alison,

Do you have any photos of the room that could help to visualise the space? Also what sort of style are you after? Traditional or contemporary?

Lamps with fabric shades are great for adding extra ambience without without creating any reflections and looking too bold. Or you could consider something more decorative for the side table, I'd suggest to go with frosted or matt glass to defuse the light and create a soft glow.
