Who was the architect please?

I am looking to do similar in Edinburgh. I need a technical and imaginative person to help who knows planning.

Finding the right architect will make a big difference to your experience of this project as well as the over all success of the finished product at the end so I would really advocate that you keep looking for one you can be happy with! It's good that you have been looking around already and a great place to continue the search is over on the RIBA's website in their 'find an architect' tab if you haven't already tried it. Here you can narrow your search down based on geography and specialism. You can also have piece of mind knowing that every practice listed is legitimate and therefore bound by the RIBA as well as the ARB's codes of conduct. I was the same about 5 years ago in that when I was searching online I could only find big architect firms which isn't what I wanted. I think a lot of the smaller technicians get business by word of mouth. Our builders recommend the guy the work with and we have gone on to use him again. Also try your local planning dept as they often have a list. I would say that if you're not exactly sure what you want a architect or designer is better than a technician. Have you looked on some pro pages here around your area?

There seems to be a gulf of misunderstanding between the architectural profession and clients. It is clear to (good) architects that a good architect will transform any project and the cost of that service will bring enormous value to the client. However, there any many non-professionals who haven't trained for 7 years that are all too willing to offer a service which is perceived by the public as being very similar only at a lower cost - unfortunately this couldn't be further from the truth. A builder won't help you as he is likely to be looking at any project from his commercial perspective and anyway he is unlikely to have any design training. A technical service will be able to produce plans, but not architecture or great design, therefore a good architect is the obvious solution. However, selection of the right architect is just as important as we do not all do the same thing; it is most important to find someone whose work matches your style and that you can build a great working relationship with, rather than an architect who gives the lowest quote. We do not do this type of project, but concentrate on complete new homes - especially paragraph 55 homes. I hope that this advice is of use and that you find a great architect to work with.

Hi, I think it’s a good layout. Some comments: we have the same utility and I don’t have a door intro the kitchen - it works as an extension of the kitchen. I asked to make the door frame standard size in case we would want one in the future but so far - 6 months - no need for it. Entrance to the kitchen from the hallway - think about those double doors that would always be flapping on the sides - we have a large - max height sliding one that just disappears and gives you an uninterrupted view to the back. We couldn’t have glass ones though as has to be fire doors and the cost of glass was far too high so maybe it would work for it, it’s just that they would be in the way. The storage from the hallway bordering the utility. Do you need it that deep? Perhaps make a bit shallower and use the saved space as a pantry from the utility side? Even if as an open one? Window of the sink - is there somewhere nice to look out to? I didn’t have any because it’s looking at the fence but you maybe luckier. And lastly, we had bifolding doors in the previous house and I chose sliding doors this time round and much prefer it as you almost never open them all and it gives a cleaner loon with fewer panels - we have 3 and you can slide 2 of them.
