Window shade to match the brick!

Hi, me and my partner were wondering if anyone could help advise us on a colour for new aluminium windows with colour matched soffits and fascias to look great with the brick and a light/medium oak door.

We don't want the anthracite grey as we feel it will look too dark. We also don't want a cold/ blue looking grey. A grey with warmth would be perfect. We would really appreciate any advice! RAL shades would be perfect.

I think the existing windows sit very well on this house and I am not sure that aluminum windows with their slim profile will sit better- just personal taste of course.
However I think one of the reason that houses on developments of similar properties are sought after is because the street scape has a cohesive look and in my opinion when people change the front appearance it devalues the road.

Have you considered having a 3D image done? We often do them for people changing windows and doors. It allows you to see several options before making costly mistakes like purchasing doors and windows. A few hundred pound to save thousands. We work in RAL colour too which is great.
I will add a previous customers options so you can see what I mean. With this client she gave me the colours and door options as she couldn't decide between them.. we are happy to make recommendation for you if you're unsure.

Hi Layla, Since you've said the extension is going to mostly match the front I would probably either go for painted timber or UPVC again. Had you been doing a significantly more modern style extension for example then you could comfortably get away without them matching. It's unfortunately you can't replace the front ones really as I think accepted practice for many properties is to keep the frames at the front of a property in timber then use UPVC on the side and rear where they're not seen much and of course then require no real maintenance.

I love soft blues and greens going towards the grey unsaturated type colours with red brick. If the red is more towards an orange then the greens work better and if more towards the pink/purple then blues look great. I'm getting so bored of dark grey doors and windows! Be brave and use some colour!

Thanks all! I've been down to the builders merchant with my builder and there are so many different types. There is one that exactly matches my brick but it's a slightly wider brick so that wouldn't work. These 2 seem to be the best of the bunch other than reclaimed bricks which I understand cost a fortune. I'm leaning towards the texture matching now too given that there is an option to tint or weather the bricks somehow if they really need it. I appreciate everyone taking the time to comment! Thank you for the suggestion! I initially had a few different colour options done e.g sage green, cream, light grey and dark grey on a photoshop application. This helped us to decide on grey. So now it's just the decision in the exact RAL shade.

This is the one we are more drawn to too! We're just conscious of making our house look gloomy! Which RAL colour(s) would best match this shade?

I really the existing colour especially, if ad you say, it's to sit with an oak door - I'm a big fan of grey/lead coloured Windows etc but what you have is gorgeous on this brickwork. Sorry that's not very helpful! X

It might be a bit too warm for you as we have paler stone but we are just in the process of getting our windows and doors changed and done in RAL 1019 Grey Beige looking for a warmer grey-ish colour to compliment Oak doors.

I appreciate all comments! Its a big decision so want to get it right. I agree white and oak looks lovely. We're trying to move away from wooden frames and don't want to replace with pvc. I have a lot of trees around the house and get so many spiders and they're egg sacks living in the frames. Also the house is exposed with fields to the left and back so aluminium would make it really secure. From a maintenance perspective we wouldn't need to repaint and cleaning is easy.

It's a huge decision and it wasn't until we stared trying to decide that I realised there were so many variables.

We were weighing up aluminium versus wood and for us, a big part of that decision was how they would also look from the inside. We didn't want to have our internal scheme determined by what complimented the stone on the outside.

Ours are actually wood and it's allowed us a mix of a different RAL colour on the inside (we actually went for a very clean white) and also natural oak for some of the picture windows and bifolds, along with the colour of our choice outside.

I also wanted the freedom to be able to repaint them and change the colours in 10 years time if the fashion changes and I knew that wasn't an option with aluminium. With the wood we can repaint inside and out as our taste and / or fashion changes. Although you do have to maintain which you don't with aluminium!!!

With the colours we started with a RAL colour chart and handed it to all friends and family who walked through the door. They then stood outside with no comments or pointers from us and we asked them to pick the one they thought went best with the stone.

4 out of 6 people chose exactly the same shade from over 200 colours, so this went straight into the short list!

We then had 3D renders done with that colour and a couple of others and seeing it on the pictures made it a pretty simple decision.

Just for info we used Kloeber for our windows and bifolds and would highly recommend them; even the builders were commenting on what excellent quality they are.

Hi Ellen, It's Claire's 3D images that I added above. The windows chosen gave us great freedom inside and as Claire said the wood allows you to change the colour if required in the future - it also allows slightly thicker frames.

Thanks for such great advice! I've been asking friends and family but only using digital images so I will see if I can get hold of a RAL colour chart. So far most people we have asked have said go for a light grey option which we agree with. We quite like RAL 7030 stone grey as it would compliment the scheme inside too! Thanks for your help.

Amazon do the RAL cards and I think a set is around £14. Good luck.

I would highly recommend getting the £43 chart from Amazon if you can- it's the RAL k5 as you get a full sheet per colour on a fan and it allows you to hold the whole sheet up against the brick work with no other colours in view.

I really resented paying it at the time but considering how much you'll be spending on the windows I think it's 100% worth it!

Thanks I've just bought 7 shades of grey in the RAL sheets. I've also bought the same colours in a Matt paint I'm going to try on the window frame :)

I've just been looking at your profile and love the style of a kitchen you've saved made by Blakes. Did you end up using them?

Hi Ellen,

We went with a very similar style but from a local company called Unfitted who handmade all their kitchens.

We're having the units in a dark inky blue (Como from Zoffany) and a grey / white Quartz top.

I can't share a pic yet as it's only being fitted later this month after all our building work is finished but here are some renders from our brilliant designer who helped us pull it all together from the ideas I liked (lots from Blakes!) to actually getting everything ordered and scheduled.

Thanks for kitchen info!! So overwhelming trying to find the best options. Here's the second colour up 'stone grey' on the colour sheets I posted previously. The photo is showing it a little more silver. It's a creamy Matt grey.

I am looking at getting a single story extension added onto a room at the back of my house. It’s roughly 3.2m by 3.2m. We would be looking at one wall full brick with a side wall and front wall been glass/sliding door type. Can anyone help me with a budgetary cost? I’d appreciate any advice or information.
