Under stairs dilemma
Comments (19)I would always rather invest in stunning furniture than spend money on more permanent changes. In my experience you can make any space look great with the right furniture and decor. Rather than spend money on something structural I would work with the space you have with furniture that works better than the heavy farmhouse style. The nicest furniture in the room is the sideboard so I would build on that. I'd look at something like Gubi Beetle dining chairs to bring in an organic streak. Not cheap but cheaper than building in storage (the next best option) or enlarging the window which won't make much difference - and you can take them with you if you move! You could look at Made.com for a cheaper but complementary table. Then a decent lampshade - perhaps Tom Dixon Etch - a side lamp on the sideboard and lots of plants and pots to empathise the organic, cosy nature of the room. Finish with some pictures in the wall and you have a lovely, cosy, earthy room that feels like being down Alice's rabbit hole rather than under the stairs. Good luck....See MoreUnder stairs design ideas please
Comments (9)I always think that a hall with a seating area is just bliss for sitting down while pulling on your boots or flicking through a magazine or two! I would shelve the entire area that is before the post and have a built in seat with more storage above and below it to make life even more clutter free. Good luck hope it works out for you....See MoreDownstairs cloakroom
Comments (17)Hi, I posted some photos and floor plan on another thread awhile ago. Here is the link - https://www.houzz.co.uk/discussions/do-you-have-a-cloakroom-dsvw-vd~3409933?n=12 From recollection, the cost was about £8K which included having a new window put in and moving the electrics consumer unit. I had to pay an additional £2K to have the elec and gas meters moved outside. Remember to include heating in the new room otherwise it will only be used 8 months a year! I have found it very useful as my elderly parents now have difficulty with the stairs when they visit and the only other loo is in the bathroom. No problems until someone wants to spend a long time in the bath or to take ages doing their makeup....See MoreCloakroom under the stairs
Comments (3)Maybe 5 toilets is excessive, however, it all depends on whether or not you continuously want to walk upstairs to go to the loo. A toilet these days on the ground floor is more than usual, and sometimes expected! It's your money, your inconvenience in having to go upstairs all the time, so, personal choice. It can only add more value, most probably. It certainly would in our area. I'd say, go for it! ( Legs and knees can only get older! )...See MorePeter Butler
