Extractor Hood.... integrated ceiling or an island hood?

We are in the process of designing our new kitchen.

I want the gas hob on a Peninsular worktop, and vent the extractor outsider.

The question is... should I go for a ceiling extractor or an island extractor?

Any experience / preference?

Actually, I rather like the hood kind because they create an intimacy around the cooking area. However, they do pick up dust and grease rather visibly on the sloping surfaces the unless you are fairly fanatical in your cleaning routines...

In our showroom we have a ceiling extractor on display, we think it looks sleek and neat. Faber have an extractor called 'sky lift' which actually adjusts via remote control to come closer or further away from the hob: http://www.faberhoods.co.uk/portfolio/ceiling-hoods/skylift/ Good luck!

I don't have one in my island unit. I had one many years ago and didn't think it was effective. This afternoon I've been out to quote on kitchen worktops and they had a wide chimney island extractor over their 5 ring gas hob. To me it stood out like a sore thumb. I certainly couldn't get used to it (especially as a person who doesn't have or like them). I felt as though I would bash my head on it. Based on that I'd opt for something in the ceiling so it's not blocking any view.

Will an integrated extractor stop grease build up on cupboard fronts?

TBH I would be reluctant to have a cupboard directly over the hob for this very reason. It's a real bugbear of mine, greasy cabinets and surfaces from cooking. I would also imagine that rising steam may also cause problems down the line. That said, we've just bought an Elica (being installed next week) for our new kitchen, because they have a good reputation (as far as I'm aware) and seem to perform well, but as for others I'm afraid I can't be of much help. I'm interested to hear of other people's experience with grease build up in your scenario, but I guess it also depends on what type of cooking do.

A venting hob like the Bora is the best solution, especially if you plan to use an induction hob. A ceiling extractor is discrete, but, if you enjoy cooking and making fumes, a ceiling extractor is not likely to work as well as a good ventilating hob. If you do speak to Westin, I think they will tell you that a ceiling extractor is not the best solution for cooks who like to make lots of vapours, especially with smokey cooking. A ceiling hob is usually too high to be effective for serious cooks, unless it has a very powerful motor and has a deep inclined baseplate, which does not help your issue. A venting hob can extract outside (with forward planning) or, in most cases, recirculate. The expense isn't that high given that you get a hob and extractor in one.

My gut feel is heat rises - so with a hood you get some extraction 'for free' before turning on the wind turbines? Having said that - I've no personal experience with integrated extractor hobs - perhaps they are quiet?

Check out the Bora hobs. Very efficient integrated extraction. Miele also bringing one out in the summer.

Why dont you have a look at down-draft extractor fans? Many appliance manufacturers now have them - Bora, Caple, Seimens, Meile etc.

Island extractors are very good with the correct ducting in ceiling void , but can restrict your view

Ceiling and down draft extraction is now the norm

Having been the recipient of a few bangs on the head from particularly nice sharp corners of cooking hoods I would definitely go for the ceiling type!
