Retired..Dining Room used a Office

We now have a empty room it has been a Office for over 40 years hence the deco! Now what to do with it? Obviously want to utilise it but not really back to a dining room, thinking of a morning room with a Tv etc as it opens into the conservarty which is South facing, but it,s a bit dark with the patio glass. Also should I knock the dividing wall down and open the kitchen.

A plan of the whole house would be useful but on first glance I think take the wall down between this room and the kitchen

Great potential! I would either open it up more to the conservatory or the kitchen, depending on how it would be most used.

A friend just had a beautiful large silk scarf cut into quarters and made into 4 cushions. Perhaps you could do the same, depending on the size of your scarf. She used her scarf for the cushion fronts and the backs were a solid, matching colour. They are stunning - and a real talking point.

Turned the home office into my music room.

I finally managed to take some time off work - Wednesday to Monday - complete bliss. During this time, I dedicated one whole day to tidying my music room as basically things had been piling up in there since we've moved house, and it was just becoming a bit of a junk room. This is how it ended up - I'm pretty pleased with it now. I could still yet do with a few shelves on the walls (which are in the garage), and a few minor changes - but I'm pretty stoked on how it's turned out.

I think because you have the length/depth of the desk, I would suggest running the lighting behind the desk (so similar to your final example but running in the L shape!). I only have experience using these lights in kitchen bars but attached is a link which would be super easy for you to install yourself. Under Cabinet Lighting

A plan would be great. I steer away from opening up the conservatory to this room as the conservatory has a twin wall roof, which will immediately make it very cold.

So, maybe open up the kitchen to this room??

Be aware, you cant create a permanent opening between a habitable space and a conservatory. A conservatory always has to have an external quality door separating the two because its treated as a sub-standed (thermally) space. Plans would help.

I disagree, as far as i know, ( and i'm not an architect ), you can create an open space but it's down to building control and the amount of glass etc. We have an open plan space. You can get around this by having internal bi-folds if you wish, or ones that you could put back when selling etc.

From an excerpt on that topic 'It will be Part L of the Building Regulations, which covers the conservation of fuel and power. As long as a conservatory is separated from the main house by closeable doors, it is essentially a separate structure - like a lean-to greenhouse - and is not subject to these regulations. But a permanent opening makes it part of a home’s habitable space, and so it will have to conform. The total area of glass will be restricted to around a quarter of the floor area of the house, and the glazing must have a thermal performance up to the latest Building Regulations. If you do not wish to install doors, you could possibly get around this by using less glass, and a much higher standard of glazing - double low-E glass, gas-filled, warm-edge spacers, for example - which will lower the overall heat losses. Ultimately, the decision lies with the building control officer, who has a broad discretion and is able to interpret the requirements as he sees fit. So if he wants doors, then you will have to install doors. If you choose to remove them at a later stage, then nobody can stop you, and this is possibly what was done by the previous owners who sold you the house.'

No disrespect. Its Horses for courses. If the conservatory is what it says and has a glass roof and glazed sides, it is not a habitable space. To be a habitable space the walls, floor and roof would have to meet current regulations. This does not preclude the use of glazing beyond the b regs, as long as one compensates by increasing insulation to other elements.

Decided to knock down the wall now between kitchen and dining room, although I do not need really any more space, but on the other hand don ,t know what to do with the empty room! Would like ideas to furnish the area now all I have in the area is a oak smart dining table, would like seating area and still want my computer to hand also need a TV.

Hi Judy, as many have said, a plan would be really helpful for us to see the spaces and fears involved as well as sizes so we know what can actually fit into the space.

If you're also doing the living room maybe it's worth having a few consultations with designers to make sure the ground floor flows throughout the spaces and that the layout works for you.

I would definitely knock the wall down between the office and dining room, maybe leaving a small nib as a slight divider either side so that doors don't look too odd being one either side.

I think what you use it for would depend on the living room space and how you make this work plus what spaces you need from your home.

It would give you a whole other wall to work with which would be good. I would then be looking at what room that door is in? What happens in that space once the doors blocked up.

How about leaving a pier wall leaving a clear gap either side of say 1.0m. Make sure wall above openings are removed to ceiling level. Creates a physical break in the space whilst still having connection with the kitchen. Wall can take rad, TV, be decorated as a feature wall. Block up the door into the office. We've done this for clients, it works well.
