Design Ideas for a 1960s house

We are doing a fairly large project involving a double storey rear extension. I will have plenty of questions regarding that but for now would really appreciate some help in how to make the front look more appealing. The garage is being converted to a room so the yellow doors will be gone. Also looking at adding a porch. What window frames should we go for? Keep the same colour roof tiles? Any suggestions welcome.

I have a 60s house too and just pinned this today as a 'someday' option. Think the grey windows look great and bringing the front door forward is an option if you decide not to go for a porch. Good luck with the building work!

Grey without a doubt. The front of your house is ideal for this with the shape of your windows.

Hi @whizzywig - this is the current layout: On the ground floor the lounge, small bedroom and main bedroom all look out onto the courtyard so the glass is in place but could do with an update eventually. We acutally viewed some Span estate houses with a view to buying - Field End, Cedar Chase, Weymede, The Plantation. But in the end we found this place on a small estate in SE London that fitted the bill.

E D not sure why there wasn't an option to personalise my user name it just gave it to me! Jonathan thank you so much for your detailed drawing it had never occurred to us to think about that layout which is why we posted on here Our house is built on a hill so our extension floor level is up around 1.5m and you have caught the shape down the side of our garage perfectly so would that all add to the cost of the build The layout does definitely give us something to think about as it wouldn't iinterfere with the light in our main living space and would be nice to have the option of the shower in there too

Hi Ben, there isn't a particularily good not expensive softaware to do all these things. the best is to use Photoshop if you are using the computer. you can try free moodboard progamms, it will allow you to upload a smaple you are aftder and try use it: Style Sourcebook, Design Files etc. most of apps on phones and pads are based on a photoshop idea: DecorMatters, Homestyler, Morfolio. paint companies like Dulux, Sherwin Williams have decent paint visualiser.

Can you not have a larger or double door?? Its a big entrance so I would say definitely a pitched roof and then I would centralise the door with window either side. Its difficult as I don't know if that's a possibility with the layout of what is behind the door. My idea for the garden would be do away with the bit of grass on the right but keep some colour and planting to the left. You could add a couple of pots with buxus in either side of the door and think about some nice lighting! How exciting. It will be gorgeous

Hi, what a great house! How exciting.

If you are talking about a project that large I would consider taking on an interior designer from the start. They can help manage budgets, make sure the property flows as a whole rather than working from area to area and can help saving with things like trade discounts - along with much much more.

With my clients for example I create 3D's of the space or externals so you would be able to see exactly what the front will look like with those changes - we can look at the best window configurations and colours before you make an costly purchases.

I agree with Daisy that it lends its shape well to work with some nice grey windows but overall it will depend on the style you are looking to achieve both inside and out.

Making the porch way larger and adding some depth to to the space (when the new window is in is a great idea. It will add all important space to the front whilst not taking away from the interiors. Getting rid of the yellow, updating the windows, a new porch/front door, some nice lighting and a few new plants will create magic and give you a clean new contemporary look.

I'm not sure if you've seen it, but there is a Houzz newsletter this week about updating the outside of 60's and 70's houses, so that should give you a start on inspiration. Some of the alterations are amazing.

Not sure how modern or retro you want to go, but I think I would modernise/enlarge the windows particularly on the left if you are removing the garage doors.

Some great ideas there and thanks for the photos. Wish I had thought of the large porch but having had my plans rejected once, and just submitted new ones, I think I will leave it for another day. The grey looks good as do the larger windows. I think the smooth render makes a big difference....is it expensive? Working on a bit of a tight budget unfortunately.

@kikiamak - the newsletter showed some incredible transformations. Unfortunately local planning will not allow me to deviate that much from the other houses on the street. Maybe if I ever escape to the country one day....Some great ideas nontheless. Thanks for heads up.

Grey windows can look great where they stand out on a white rendered house.
I think you will struggle to find an image you like of a house with dark red brick and grey windows because there is not enough contrast.
I think this is great looking house- but in my opinion you should definitely try to make the entrance grander and more prominent by adding a porch

Thx Jonathan. I agree that the grey windows would look best with a white render. I like the idea of a white render but my wife prefers brick. Oh well. Might just stick to white or at least lighter colours to offset the dark brick.
