The shelving was made by my joiner and the sofa is by sofa.com, covered in a custom velvet.

Having just gone through exactly the same process and spent literally hours trawling the internet, visiting showrooms and speaking to companies on the phone we ended up ordering with Unfitted from Moreton-in -Marsh. Other companies we considered were deVOL (rather expensive!) and Main kitchen company in York. Unfitted pricing is very comparable to Evie Willow and a bit more than Shaker Kitchen Company, however they have a showroom you can go and view the cabinetry. They are also super, super helpful, nothing is too much trouble and they will come out for free and help with designs, ideas etc. Ask for Mark the owner.

The simplest way is to shop around with one plan so you can compare like for like. So work out the layout either yourself or with an independent pro like us. Then email or drop your plans and item list into all the showrooms that offer the look you are after. That way you are giving the retailers/trade counter/online shop what they need to price it. You won’t feel beholden to any particular showroom who you may have asked to spend time designing for you and you don’t waste ( yours and their) time with different planners/sales people from lots of places who each want to come and measure up etc . Yes. But with built-ins the crown molding should continue along the bookcases too, so closing off a small section of the top won't look bad. If you don't want to go all the way up, close off the top section, flush with the chimney and column, so your crown molding goes in a straight line. 2. No gaps. But you shelving will need to be a bit deeper then the chimney, because you don't want your books sticking out. If you want some more space between your mantle and the books, have the builder extend the chimney wall sideways, see example: If you want your built-ins recessed, the chimney should be filled out.. I would suggest a wider mantle base, from unit to unit, because these little carpet corners will most likely look off.. 3. Have a little less shelves where you want to mount your tv. Pop up? That would be a waste of the cabinet below. And doors at that height won't look great too. Have some doors on the lowest section, to balance out the visuals of 'filling' and 'furniture'. 4. The same color as your doors, trim, mantle. White. There will be enough color in them once they're filled.

You should only order a Shaker kitchen if you do not value your patience, self-respect, time and - most of all - hard-earned cash. It would be too boring to go into the litany of broken promises, missing items, unavailable items, damaged items, substandard items, amateur rectification, unpaid refunds and total lack of communication. On this last point, don’t be taken in by the shopping experience - the showroom staff are great but the back office is hopeless. It is impossible to get a meaningful response from them. Please note that things are no better under the new owners; they are very evasive and clearly have no respect for customers. On this page, you will see that the new owners are using weasel legal explanations to try to shrug off these reviews, which does not change the horrendous customer experience. (But, as they are being technical about their acquisition, let’s look at that too; I very much doubt they are servicing existing customers out of the goodness of their hearts. It is more likely that the revenue of the existing customers’ contracts is one of the assets that they bought, which means they have legal obligations to such customers.) There is also a review from Mr Grunfeld, who is apparently the founder of the Shaker Kitchen Company (whose assets were acquired by Shaker Workshop). He clearly does not respect the voice of his customer, which explains why the culture of the business that he has transferred to Shaker Workshop is so poor. Legislation such as the Consumer Rights Act 2015 was introduced to protect customers against the attitude of businesses such as Shaker (in both its guises). The business seems toxic so only deal with them if you want to be contaminated. It is an ugly experience.
