stainless steel worktops
Comments (10)Hi Gj Dee! Quartz is the more practical of the two options in the long run. Manufacturers such as Caesarstone or Silestone produce great options in a variety of colours and finishes. The material is highly durable and resistant to stains and scratching therefore it should look like it did on day one in a few years after installation. If your husband is looking for something that looks industrial you could maybe look at their concrete-like options. However with all this in mind we have used stainless steel worktops for clients in the past and have included it in our showroom displays. It does have unparalleled heat resistance etc but the issue with it is that it isn't impervious to small nicks and scratches in everyday wear and tear. If you are happy and embrace that it will not look scratch free then go for it - it does add character to the top! Overtime these scratches will build up and blend in with one another creating a unique patina. It might be an idea to use both depending on the style of your kitchen. We decided to do this with one of our recent displays. Good luck with your choice!...See MoreHob in island pros and cons
Comments (14)We ummed & ahhhed over this a few months ago - especially after reading all the opposing views in various Houzz discussions. I was desperate to get rid of our horrid noisy fan hanging down above a peninsula, so didn’t want to end up replacing it with something similar! I went in to the kitchen designer adamant the hob would be around the edge of the kitchen... then I saw the Neff induction hob with the integrated down-draft extractor in action at the showroom! (I’m such a sucker!) So after some cheeky negotiations (husband and kitchen company!) we are going with that. I figured a fan much closer to source can’t be a bad thing, the noise is far less ‘in your face’ as it’s not at height, the induction hob blends into the flat worktop plus you can chuck all the filter parts in the dishwasher - winner. I was mindful of some of the safety advice given on here re splashes whilst cooking if people are sat at the island; so it’s wide enough that you are very much away from the hob if you’re directly opposite the cook. But the main thing we did was offset the hob at one end of the island and are having the seating around the opposite corner at the other end. Hope that helps! :-)...See MoreOpinions on concrete flooring in kitchens?
Comments (30)Hello We recently completed a project in West London and as an architect I am generally a fan of polished concrete floors. The two companies we came across were : Lazenby's who every one knows and the Polished Concrete Flooring Contractors but there are others. It was used in the open plan kitchen and living area and looks great, we specified a Dark Basalt grey colour which came out beautifully. The one watch point we have become aware of with this type of flooring is that some clients would like to install under floor heating with it But due to the nature of concrete, polished or not, it is not a great fan of rapid temperature changes which cause expansion and visible cracking in the system. Any heating system that integrates underfloor heating with a polished concrete floor needs to be done carefully as the temperature range in the floor needs to be specially controlled. Some suppliers , such as Lazenby, will not recommend it. In this particular project we used Zender perimeter trench heaters to avoid this risk. Otherwise it is a material with a natural texture and is also a sturdy finish that is easy to maintain. The pictures were taken prior to the recent completion of the project....See MoreExtended semi layout help please!! Layouts attached.
Comments (9)Thanks everyone. I think we are going to extend the hallway into the utility as this is the cheapest option and the utility needs doing anyway. We are going to remove some of the cupboards, so that the pushchair can go in the space created and move the sofa to block the playroom door... then we can test it out for a few weeks. I've reorganised the kitchen cupboards, moved the microwave and the plates etc and its made a big difference already to how the kitchen feels. Feeling positive :)...See MoreBitsnbats
