Wooden Shutters in Bay window or not

Hi we are replacing these dark stained wooden shutters as we are painting all the woodwork white. Unfortunately because of the finish (highly lacquered) they can not be painted. (so I've been told !)

Has anyone bought and fitted shutters themselves? There are various online retailers that are significantly cheaper than getting a company in to do this.

Would a blind be better than shutters?

I love shutters. I looked at the own fit ones but a friend who did them said you have to be super super careful with the measuring etc as can all go wrong. However if yours fit well then maybe you could just measure the existing ones to change to white ones.

It seems such a shame that you have to remove these. I would do a bit more research regarding painting them as I am sure it is possible. Alternatively go for well made custom shutters or consider roman blinds?

Light and window access...the most common concerns exhibited by 99.9% of our customers!! The vast majority of them go on to say that their new shutters do not block out anywhere near as much light as they anticipated and window access is not a problem! Many customers also feel that their rooms look bigger as a result. You mentioned that "you know they will look great" and that they are very fashionable...sounds to me like your answer lies within your question. :) Plantation shutters are also the only window treatment that adds value to your home...something else to consider when making your decision!! I absolutely adore shutters. I've no personal experience of installation, but it's clearly very doable, and I just found this great example of what they could look like in your square bay (these are from stylish shutters). Might work best for giving you a little more privacy from passers by too. That said, I also think Roman blinds look fabulous in a bay window, really subtle and very classy, but an altogether different look. Also, during the day, it means you can be pretty exposed. If privacy is important, definitely go with the shutters.

The previous blinds were actually a light brown wood which I did like, but not the colour. I have looked at the shutters from blinds2go but the 10-12 week lead time is a bit too much (and while £1000 isn’t astronomical, I’ve just completed a rebuild of my kitchen extension so trying to be frugal). I guess now, with some confirmation from you lot, I’m either thinking white wood Venetians as the long term solution or a short term white roller or Roman blind until I can afford the shutters.

I would use top-down/bottom-up insulated cellular blinds on the windows. They are attached at the top of the window, but have double strings. They can be pulled down from the top of the window, but can ALSO be pushed up from the bottom of the window. They can be bunched together in the middle/anywhere from top to bottom if you need to block sun glare. When they are closed they will let diffused light in. They will also help with temperature control when they are closed. The blinds allow you to fully open or fully close the view for each section (left, center, right) at any time. Unlike a roller shade, you can open just the top portion of a top-down/bottom-up blind to preserve privacy when you are sitting or standing in the room. I would put a drapery rod across the top of the wall in front of the bay window and put black-out draperies on it. Make the rod long enough so the draperies are pulled all the way back against the wall and do not block any of the window when they are open. Good luck!

You can paint anything with Zinser Bullseye 123 primer (even gloss cupboard doors!) Briefly sand down the shutters, use Zinser Bullseye 123 primer and paint. Easier (& cheaper) than replacing them.
Then stand back, feel proud and enjoy.
