Velux Roof Light or Sun Tunnel in en-suite

Hi All,

We are renovating the en-suite (which was once a boxroom so has no natural light) The plans have an electric Velux roof light, however the contractor has suggested a sun tunnel instead as they are cheaper and easier to install. Given it is an en-suite and will also have a roof extractor now not sure if we need the velux. The main reason in the first place was to get natural light in the room but I do also like the idea of being able to open the window at a click of a button.

Has anyone installed sun tunnels instead of an opening and closing Roof light?

Hi, Craig -- it's true that a sun tunnel is cheaper, however it really is very different to having a velux, which lets in a huge amount more light. And there is nothing like actually being able to open it, as even the best roof extractors aren't that powerful.

It does depend on what kind of sun tunnel, how big it is, etc; if it is to have clear or frosted glass, however if it is possible for you i would absolutely consider the velux.

My preference is the velux.
You need to decide if you want the cheaper solution or the better one

Luciana, I have looked at your photos carefully, and I don't feel you will get away with the Velux window. It will probably have to go. Looking at your build pictures, the entire room is in the roof slope so you don't have much chance of bringing light through the slope side.In your build pictures, I notice you divided the space into two rooms. What is on the other side? You have a tall wall on the shower. Perhaps you could install a tall window (transom) that allows light through from the other room. It won't be a view but it will afford some natural light. Question is, is it worth it?Another solution I have done for a client is to install a full window (we wanted to do it with a switch that turns it from transparent to opaque but it was so pricey). Here is one we fitted for a client in his attic en-suite - it is a Solatube model - www.solatube.co.uk. They have a helpful helpdesk (!) and can talk you through the dos and donts of fitting one (including proximity to structures that may cast shadows) Hope this helps Nick

Hi Andy, As it's a bathroom, which I assume will have lots of humidity, I'd suggest a polyurethane (PU) or PVC frame. These materials will withstand the moisture a lot better than pine. They won't make a huge dent in your budget if you go for a smaller brand. If it will be out of reach, you can use an opening pole (about £25) to let in fresh air or treat yourself to a remote control VELUX INTEGRA. Sun tunnels are fantastic ways of adding natural light to your home and very easy to fit. There are a range available from top brands but our customers particularly like the Lightway sun tunnel due to its quality and performance (plus, we have a summer sale at the moment). I like that idea!!! Or turn the bathroom into a walk in wardrobe, add en suite to room 3 and have the en suite as a sole en-suite. It comes down to preference of having the master dressing room to be large with the lovely views or the en-suite.

Hi thanks for the feedback, I think we will stick with the velux roof light.
