Help with picture rail placement

Hi,
I want to install a picture rail in a small room. I have a door and a window, but the top of the window is about 2 cm's below the top of the door so I cannot use it as a guideline as intended.
I know the rail goes between 30 and 50 cm's so where should I put it considering I cannot use the natural lines of the door and window frame.

This discussion neglects the beam angle of the bulb in the fixture. These can vary from about 15 degrees to around 50 degrees. Additionally, tilting a Gimbel fixture does not necessarily cut off light as the beam is a three-dimensional paraboloid for which the math is much more complex than this simplistic tangent formula. The guidelines here will put you in the ballpark however. Unfortunately many "lighting experts" don't really know lighting. RPI (Rennselaer Polytechnic) has a lighting division with good information on line for those interested. I attended their one-day course prior to designing our own lighting for a kitchen renovation. I'm loving all the advice, suggestions and photos. Thanks everyone! Finding it really helpful. The ceiling must remain white because I don't want to have to paint it again. Hellish job! I really like the idea of painting the rail and skirting boards the same as the wall. Would I use eggshell for the skirtings or a matt varnish over emulsion? Suppose either would do the job? Like the idea of using a lighter shade of the wall colour above the rail. I think the white scheme looks super smart, but I might try the colour and see how it looks. Using colour in that space really appeals to me. The wallpaper idea has worked well in our bedroom, it makes the room feel cosy and personal. But, it might be too much for our lounge, which is a much bigger room with a lot going on already. The lounge window faces east so very light at one end, and very dark at the other. It's a cool room during the day, but cosy in the evening with fire lit. If using the wallpaper idea, give some careful thought to your choice of pattern. The size and repeat. It's got to work in a very short area. Would love to see pics if anyone does it though!

Mirror solution for low picture rail over mantlepiece?

I would suggest that if anybody goes for the 'leaning' style of mirror, that they put something on the mantle that is permanently fixed to stop the bottom from accidentally sliding forward. One of the worst accidents I had years ago, was on a mirror that was leaning on a shelf. It, for whatever best reason known to itself started to slip as i was standing in front of it. I pushed it away from myself and my daughter standing behind me, only 3 at the time. The frame broke and my thumb ran straight down the side of the mirror cutting it to the bone and severing the tendon! Make sure all mirrors are safely attached to a wall somewhere!!

Several years ago, we wanted floating shelves but after googling around for “alcove shelves” we found this image - it was from a carpenter in Brighton who had made shelves out of mdf and then painted them - and they look like flowering shelves. I found a local carpenter and he basically copied the idea for us - and years later we still love our shelves, and several of our friends have copied them! We even copied the two lower angled shelves for our tv! The cost was also much better than buying ready made floating shelves or even Ikea offers. My top tip - find a local carpenter!
