Is this bush alive or dead?!! Help!!

Hello all, we are starting to get to grips with our garden and just been looking round the many varied shrubs we seem to have inherited in our new garden and come across this one. Not sure what it is but it has these pretty clusters of white flowers and from a distance looks quite nice! However every leaf has been vastly eaten by something! I can't see any sign of caterpillars or whatever but when you move the leaves sort of powdery stuff comes off. Any ideas if this is something I can sort out or am I best to chop the whole thing down?! Appreciate some help as I'm only a novice...;)

Comments (26)I don't see why you couldn't introduce a section of artificial turf through the existing deck (a little like we have done in the attached example). Artificial turf is a fantastic material and when used like this it forms a feature around which we set the patio furniture. Large bold planters could be introduced down one side see www.designscapeuk.com for an interesting range of styles and colours. Combined with LED spotlights retro fitted into the surface in an interesting pattern this would start to develop the space. There is also the possibility to create planting holes within the deck into which trees could be set - probably on a simple grid and uplit. Comments (49)I don't mind the current colours although a greys and beiges tend to suck light out of a room, a brighter colour rather than just white will help. I agree with much of what Jill says above, with a few tweaks ... the lighting needs attention. The room needs some interest, colour and texture to create depth. Get a larger rug, more colourful, with organic pattern which draws the eye outward. Big enough to sit the furniture on. Pick up some of the colours from the new rug and get some cushions. A couple of plants would help with texture and add life to the room. I know you are using the mirrors to add light and space but the one under the stairs is just reflecting the underneath of the stairs ... try a colourful print of a pathway between trees for example, to draw the eye beyond the room otherwise it's a bit bland. The TV is just on a stand that is too small and a bit low, go for a wider piece or try positioning the unit against the other wall in that same corner so it is facing the sofas, then the TV won't look so out of balance. If you make the room a bit livelier and interesting the light issue won't be such a problem. Comments (23)Hi i am happy you like my little garden retreat, you are right it is nice to add your own touch to your garden and not to be to regimental, it gives you a great satisfaction when you sit back in your garden lounger and think i created that, it also works out a lot cheaper, just adding bits at a time, and if a plant is not working for you, you can dig it out and move it knowing that you have not paid someone a fortune to put them in, i am not saying professional help is not needed as i had to get someone in to do my flag stones but it was someone i knew so that worked out cheaper and my brother did the decking at both side of my garden, he is not a professional he just likes DIY don't tell him but i think he is pretty good at it lol.. it cost me the price of the wood and 2 cans of beer,( i was given a couple or quotes of £450 for a 10ft x 7ft deck and £399 for a 7ft x 6ft deck,) i did paint it big mistake on my part as with being south facing it just peeled off with the heat but is nearly all off now so i will just power wash it once a year and give it an oil treatment, when you get your garden done send us a pic i for one would love to see your project,...See More
