For me the trick is defiantly positioning lay some down and stand some up, add some personal decorative pieces to break up the books Play with height and groupings of things maybe put something tall with 2 smaller things add some pictures or even those little boards with sayings on. Mostly though I think it's important too add some beautiful things that mean something to you and incorporate them with your books.

Before rushing out shopping for different items you must decide how you will use this space; will it be just telephone corner?; will you need storage or hinging space?; how do you link this corner to the rest of your property stylistically, practically and colouristically? Answer these questions before taking inspiration from others. This looks like a dark corner, so perhaps adding a ceiling pendent light would be useful. In terms of plants - you have to look for some that thrive in shade - cacti family, succulents that are less needy? If you use this space for shoe/coats storage then perhaps adding a short two sided bench with box storage underneath and hooks on the wall would be useful? If you decide that this is decoration only space, then perhaps adding picture/photo frames would (a lot of them, containing colours linking to the rest of the property) add character. Placing interesting table lamp would already brighten it. Think: what do YOU need/want/expect from this corner? Then it will be easy.

I agree with Minnie. Paint colour last. Try to get swatches of everything and look at them in your home, in different lights (day and night). It's amazing how different colours look in different lights. So what looks like grey in the shop, might look purple in your home. Also, hold the swatches together and hold the swatches in the direction they are going in. For example: carpet horizontal, sofa fabric vertical and horizontal, curtains vertical. Hang a set of art? I'd go for something around 2/3rd of the sofa width and hang the art just a few inches above the top of the sofa (I'd also try and ensure it's not hung in line with the top of the curtains either so there's at least a few inches gap. Alternatively add a shelf/shelves
